what are the con's to going with side exit exhaust?

sounds like you are implying that the exhaust may be a little loud...is that what i'm hearing?

if it were loud, are we talking that is will be loud in the car? or outside?

im really thinking of going that way...

thanks.

Don't get me wrong, I prefer the side exit pipes! It's just that with them exiting right behind your ear, it does make it louder than a rear of car exit.

I'm running straight thru race mufflers, so it'd be loud no matter what. If you use a quiet muffler, it shouldn't be too bad.

Based on the muffler, it could be fairly quiet as said. I removed a full length 40 series Flowmaster set and put on side exit 8" Cherry Bomb glass packs. I got the sound I wanted. The time I find it the worst is when there is a vehicle, wall or something like that for the sound to bounce off of. My wife can still have conversations on the cell while I am driving....I just go easy on the right pedal.

Look at it this way, install them and if you don't like them, it is real easy to do the full length pipes.

Unless it's a 65-66 GT350 or a race car, I'm not a fan of side exits at all. Exhaust belongs behind the car, not next to it. I have enough problems having conversations in my car with full exhaust and Hushpower II mufflers (which are much quieter than Flowmasters or glasspacks). Side exit pipes would just make it that much louder.

Not to mention, exhaust fumes tend to creep into the cab more with side-exit pipes. Sitting at a stoplight with the windows down can be unpleasant.

I do not have a problem of smelling the exhaust. I have the windows open as there is no A/C. I smell more exhaust from other vehicles than my own. I have parked in the open, in all directions trying to get an exhaust smell and could not get any odor in the car. I have had two cars recently with the same side exhaust.

I have Magnaflow Stainless mufflers and side exit exhaust and it is basically quiet. It's no Prius but it's quiet enough to have a conversation. The fumes in mine are noticable on occasion too.

In some states it's illegal. Here in Calif. it's a No-No .

We have to be under 90db at Laguna Seca so side exit is not even possible. I have 4 mufflers on the car now and full exhaust out the back.

A new V8 Mustang won't pass sound at Laguna Seca, you have to be that quiet.

What law covers side exit exhaust? I'm not aware of any, aside from the very vague law concerning modifying vehicle exhaust to amplify sound. Hell, lots of trucks come from the factory with side exit exhaust, if only on one side.

Interesting. Not that it's really enforced. Didn't some of the sn95 Roush models come stock with side-exit exhaust?

They did ... I see cars around here with it. It might just be the officer VS the attitude of the driver deal.

It's my understanding that the exhaust must exit the car BEHIND the rear most opening passenger window. This would make side exhaust legal on trucks and SUV's, and legal in front of the tire on fastbacks and SN95 vehicles where the quarter glass is stationary, but not on coupes where the quarter window can be rolled down.

The idea is that you don't want the exhaust rolling up in the face of your passengers in the back seat.

Sounds like the perfect solution to me if the MIL was in the back seat!
