To cut driveshaft or not for T5

It seems to me that all I have to do is measure the total length of the toploader and bell, and compare to the total length of the T5 and bell, and the difference is how much to cut. The old yoke seemed to stick out about an inch from the toploader. The toploader + bell is 30 inches long, and the T5 + bell is 31 3/4" (to the end of the dust boot). Is this reasoning incorrect? Am I missing something?

IIRC The process described to me was to wait until the trans is installed. Insert the T5 yoke, pull out 3/4"-1" measure from the center to center of where the universal joints will go. It seems like your method would work but does it account for slight difference in angle due to the longer trans? I'm not sure if that quite articulates what I want to say. Its early. :shrug

I am traveling today but will measure my 67 when I get back tomorrow.

Exactly what should be done. Install the trans and then put the yoke in and take the measurements with the suspension loaded (axle on jack stands). Refer to Shaun's website for help measuring: http://www.streetortrack.com/Custom-len ... 16159.html

Though I do agree it would be safer to wait and measure when everything's installed as note above, I still went ahead and measured Shag and got 50" exact from center to center while fully loaded. This might be used only as a reference point.

Craig, do you have an 8" or 9" rear? I guess the Cleveland motor might change things as well.

Yeah, I should wait til the T5 is installed and measure, but that means next Monday. Not a really big deal I guess.

Just to be sure, do I want to have the yoke out 3/4 to 1 inch from the dust boot? The boot itself is about 3/4" from the end of the tailshaft.

9". I can't imagine the length of a Cleveland being any different than a 289 or 302.

I believe the procedure is (at least I did it this way) to bottom out the yoke into the tranny and then pull it out 1" and measure from that point.

Why don't you measure your current driveline? What if it was infact 50" OC?

....also consider there are different 9" yoke lengths. There is a short and long yoke, and they vary by about 1". My 70 mach has the long style yoke, but the short yoke seems to be more common in the 9" rear arena.

Bingo! I changed to the shorter one when I did the swap instead of cutting the shaft.

Also, whether the clevo and the windsor are the same length is kind of moot. They likely differ at the mounting enough to not count on that measurement.
