The orange turd's steering column

Well, I have been quietly working on the 70 boss 302 to get it ready to fire up after a 4 year sleep and have stumbled upon a startup issue which I'm not use to. Is it true that with a 70 mustang, you can only put the car into a steering lock position with a manual tranny if you put it in reverse?

I have recently had the carb rebuilt, tested the fuel pump, etc. I do not trust the current fuel tank, nor hard line coming from the tank to the fuel pump, so for the test Im running a line from a 5 gallon gas can directly to the pump and then to carb. Once I get it running I will replace both the gas tank and hard fuel line.

I don't understand how a manual tranny, when put into reverse, can lock the steering wheel with the ignition off. There's no connection between the shifter box and the ignition. The locking mechanism should work with the key in the off position, which should also allow tilting, if that was an accessory.

Wow...goes to show that every blue moon I can be wrong. :no

Craig, why is everything a "Turd" with you? Are we seeing a pattern? :shee

Mel,
The boss was feeling a little left out so calling it a turd brought the gang together.

I also forgot to mention that what started this was that I could not remove the key from the ignition switch. I noticed that it would not switch all the way over to the off position no matter what I did, less putting it into reverse. I went online and read something about when removing the ignition switch, you must first "put the transmission into reverse if a manual or into park if an automatic". This got me to put the boss into reverse and only then was I able to pull the key.

See Mid? Even us old buzzards can still learn something new.

It does sound like a cool feature. I am not sure when they changed, but they put a slide switch under the column that you had to push with one hand and put the car in gear with the other on autos.

Figures. I was looking for one for my 70 but did not want to pay $150 for the one I found. It went on to its new home without it.

Craig, you are killing me. I work developing some of most complex weapons on the planet and can't manage to save up enuf to get my hood painted, and you have your own business and now have a coupe, fastback and a 70 Boss!?!

I didn't know you needed one.

Sorry to bust your bubble but the boss is not mine. I'm just trying to bring it back to life so it can be sold.
