Installation of Shag's front sheetmetal

OK, though I'm busy getting Red ready for Knotts, I am mentally thinking of the correct installation sequence. Am I correct that I should install the headlight extension and bucket onto the fender before fender install?

Stone guard before valance?

Note to self: order splashshields & grille.

Note to self: Get off your a$$ and install the weather stripping on the doors and mount them!

It can be done, but aren't there a couple bolts on the front of the fender that attach the fender to the radiator support "ears"? I forget how much access to these bolts there is with the buckets installed on the fenders already.....

I've always installed the fenders first, followed by the valance, and then the buckets and stone deflector.

Just pulled them off my 68, and the access is pretty easy.

By all means install the extensions on the fenders first... The two bolts that tie the fender to the radiator support are easily accessable, especially without the grill installed.

When you install the headlight extensions, be very careful with the outer most nut / stud near the fenders character line. Use a thin wall socket if you have one. The one I used was a little large and kissed the fender leaving a very small witness mark.

On the headlight extensions, also be sure the headlight adjusters are installed first as they are held by phillips head screws from the inside and are not easily accessable with everything put together.

I did doors, then hood aligned to cowl, then assembled fenders alinged to doors and hood, then stone guard, then lower valence, then the grill and trim.

I am trying to remember from last June when I put my front end back on but I am pretty sure I did my headlight buckets last because they would have prevented access to the bolts for the other pieces.

Fenders, buckets, stone guard, valance. I like to leave everything loose and only tighten them as adjustments are finalized. I was amazed at the difference mounting the valance had on fender alignment at the doors. The valance-to-fender bolts are the first thing I tightened. The shim at the lower rear of the fender has a big impact, too.

I suggest using stainless bolts for lower fender, fender to valance, and valance to frame.

Install the doors DEAD LAST I tell you.

Just ask Mid. I made him EAT his words... :lol

Doing them last is difficult and requires two people at a minimum. I installed my doors prior to the fenders and got a perfect alignment within 30 minutes without any assistance.

Yes, moving the front lower corner of the fenders inward/outward to connect it to the valance will effect the rear alignment of the fender.

Sorry Mid, it can't be a two person job to install the headlight buckets after the fenders are on because since I work alone I'd have never built four 67-68 cars. It may be difficult to hold the bucket in place while reaching around to install the fasteners, but it obviously can be done.

Ooh, look at his white board now:

Ah but Dave, Craig will be place holding everything with Great Stuff. He picked that tip up from Sac-o-tomatoes boy.

You git: I was talking about installing doors!

Now girls, lets be nice. With all this chat about all this sheetmetal, boy do I have a ways to go.

Thanks for all the great advice, but I still can't help but log onto the "What Would Nick Do" forum and seek his worldly advice.

Well, I just came to realization that I don't have enough time to work on Shag so I'm calling my local auto transporter to have it
shipped to Nicky's auto glue together center. Not only will it get done in record time but I'll be able to sell it to some schmuck in
Europe for $80k.

Why so cheap? the market for American restos over here is much higher...and now that we can't fly any more we will need more cars.
