I'm back!

After a long break from working on Mustangs I'm back! My car has recently returned from a 5+ year exile in a storage unit. It now resides in a 20X20 shop I've partially rebuilt over the last 4 months. I've been sitting on the fence for several years talking about doing this and doing that and have now decided to actually do something!

The 3 year plan:

Car gets stripped of everything. Shock towers are going bye bye, engine moves towards the rear, subframe and cage will be constructed, all the old drivetrain wil be upgraded to handle a 500-600hp powerplant, 3 link rear suspension with watts link will be fabricated, new wiring harness will be fabricated, etc. . . Welding starts in the Spring. Basically I'm building a hardcore track car that will see limited street use.

Additionally, I've been out of work since the end of April. I've decided to return to photography. A writer friend of mine, who has travelled all over the world for the last 40 years, made me an offer I cannot refuse. I'll be going along with her to India for 35 days, leaving next month. She has connections with some big publishers and we hope to generate stories and photos for publication in travel magazines and other local mediums. I also plan to have a show here in the Napa Valley sometime in the spring, you will all be invited.

Anyhow, to finance all this madness, I'll be selling off most of the drivetrain parts and I'd like to help out the local crowd so, if you're looking for something, stay tuned to the classifieds. . .

I'd definitely like to see how you set the engine back and your other modifications, so post up in the Member's Build Threads when you get the chance.

+1 on the Members Build Threads idea.

I'm quite happy for you finding yourself back into photography; I didn't realize this was a calling of yours. I'm excited for your adventures and look forward to your show in the Spring!

Robert,
Why don't you indicate your location in your profile since you will be selling some drive train parts. NorCal? Also I remember distinctly your cowl pic in your signature way back when I was frequently VMF. Very cool pic.

Hi Robert, wishing you the best of luck in your new career.

Once done, you'll have a kick-a$$ car. Perhaps you can set up a work day and we can come over to help wrench on your ride.

Have fun Robert. :pbj

Oh and Rob knows carbs..... :lol :lol He knew why mine was balking. Gasket installed wrong.DUH... :craz :sur :vic

Still in the planning stages. For the engine setback, the seat will likely move towards the rear and the trans tunnel will be modified - cowl invasion is a possibility. One disadvantage I have is that the car is over an hour away from where I live so it'lll be a couple months before I start taking measurements and constructing a rotissere. I will definately start a buld thread when i get into it.

Thanks Bill. I got my first real camera when I was 13, so I've been into photography off and on for 28 years now. Got some pro friends helping me with the digital transition and I feel ready for the trip. My writer friend knows a lot of spots off the tourist path where westerners rarely go, so that should provide plenty of adventures!

Thanks, location added! What you see in the cowl pic is SEM 'Rust Inhibitor' that I blew around with compressed air I also used similar rust inhibitors, can't remember the names, under the dash and its held up fairly well since I put the car in storage 5 years ago but those rust inhibitors don't really stop rust. Remember my 'micro-resto' thread on the VMF? I think you were just starting on Shag at the time. Anyhoo, I plan on posting a 'rust revisited' post here with pics when I get a chance.

Thanks for the idea! Hmmm, wrench day? How about a wet sanding party in the summer? I'll BBQ!

Well, the carb that is the culmination of my carb learning experience will be on eBay soon! Wanna run with the big boys Mike?

Anyway, I'm off to where the car is, Petaluma, to pull the engine and drivetrain out. Anyone looking to do a 5 lug swap? I plan to post in the classifieds this evening. Thanks all.

Pulled an all nighter Wed night and finally got the engine out. All the little things that need to be removed to get the engine out slowly returned to my memory and the engine and trans came out in a pool of blood (tranny fluid) around 2 am. Yesterday, with only 3 hours of sleep I was actually somewhat productive and got some other things done that had to be done before I leave the country. All this activity is certainly getting me in shape for the trip!

Anyway, I'll post a blurb here in the classifieds and be off to Petaluma to separate the engine and trans and remove the suspension. . .

With all the rain you are currently experiencing, can't think of a better thing to do but wrench on a Mustang.

Sure enough. One thing I did notice wed night was that there's a lot of bugs that like to come in out of the rain. I think the Mustang gods are angry with me because I was visited twice by disgusting potato bugs - actually I think it was the same bug I killed twice. . .

Didn't get anything done on the Mustang yesterday. My work at home position here in Deer Park on 6.5 acres takes a fair amount of my time and the weather ain't helpin'. So it goes. At least I enjoy the freedom to do what needs to be done when it has to be done. . .

Off to Petaluma again this afternoon to pull another all-nighter. A coffee maker goes with me this time, since Petaluma can't afford me a good cup of coffee late at night.

I wish man, but when I get out of this sandbox I dont think I am going to be able to get out to California from Tenn

My wife and I use to white water raft the russian while camping along the banks in our 69 VW camper, drinking red wine, playing strip poker......er sorry, wrong forum....

India is wonderous! I've been going non-stop for the last 3 weeks in the Rajasthan Desert and and now in Balmy Goa! Time to slow down and acclimate - Kinfisher and Tuborg beers in between bottles of water!

Taking a bit of a break here so I'll post in the appropriate forum later this evening. Facebook seems to be a lot easier to use than Wordpress, so I may just use that to speed up posting.
