brake conversion ?

I am seriously pondering converting the front brakes to disc.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good kit that can be purchased?

Most of the vendors sell kits but the prices seem to vary. Looking for something that works well without breaking the bank (no pun intended...) but certainly want to replace my master for a dual bowl while I am in the process....

I went with SSBC discs, but they definitely fall under the category of "Breaking the Bank"

+1 with talking to Shaun.

Agreed. I bought my setup from him and couldn't be happier.

You'll have a lot of options. I did mine a few years ago and went with discbrakeswap.com. It's the granada setup and was COMPLETE for a little over $500.

I have 70 spindles and brakes on my 68, but have also used SSBC 4 piston kit in the past.

This is all bolt on, any way you go. Regardless of source or price, easiest route is to get it all from one source as a complete kit. Cheapest route is to hunt and peck for parts, sourcing some used from a local yard or ebay. Sometimes you can be penny wise and pound foolish getting heavy brake parts shipped individually vice buying them all at one time as a kit.

Upgrading to disc is what I consider the best mod I've done to my car.

One thing to consider before choosing your disc brakes is your rims. Your SS rims will not work with some disc brake systems. That is if you have factory SS rims and not bigger aftermarket ones. fd

The rims are 14's.

When I bought the car the guy told me they were original. Only reason I believe that may be true is we had already traded money and signed all the paperwork when he brought it up telling me they were original.

My buddy that runs a shop locally was suggesting SSBC...but they seem a little on the expensive end. I don't mind paying for the kit since that sound much easier then trying to junk yard it. However, not sure I see too much benefit in spending $1k for the kit when other places have them for $300 - $500 less.

Watch the granada setup on 14" wheels. I don't think it will work. Make sure you ask this question to whomever you talk to.

Use stock KH parts on the spindles and a dual bowl MC. Why save money on the brake hardware when you will have to spend it on trying to make your wheels fit? Unless you want different wheels...

I may buy some new repop wheels down the road and thinking of eventually getting 15's if I ever buy new rims. Currently however, I haven't put too much thought into it because rims are a very down the road issue for me.

But for the time being I am just running with what I've got because I have better things to spend $ on and the one's I have while not super pretty work just fine.

I've looked into getting my current rims refinished but the only place local I could find that would "dip" them wanted $200 / rim. I can buy repops for less than that and some of them look pretty nice.

Some day down the road I'll probably get new rims and then put the ones I have now in the garage (or attic) for safe keeping if I were to verify they were indeed original. I've had the wheels off numerous times but I always forget to look on the back for any sort of stamping.

I am going to upgrade to discs real soon and am probably going to go with this one. Standard stock brake system. Prior VMF threads/posts were positive and they have the best all-inclusive price I could find. Anyone here use this brand? Thanks.

I am putting the DiscBrakeSwap.COM (CSRP) kit on my 70 now.

My 14x8 Magnum 500s fit without issue.

The only real PITA on these kits is redoing your hard brake lines but you would probably have this issue with any kit.

In my case, I had to rework the two front hard lines to adapt to the front flex line facing the opposite direction from stock and the intermediate line (front to rear) in order install the proportioning valve.

You definitely have to start freestyling at this point.

I guess one advantage of a kit with factory mustang brakes is there is no freestyling. Everything I used bolted on with absolutely zero modification. It also helped that I bought new brake lines and ordered the ones for factory discs. I wanted a 100% new brake system.
