Another 64.5

Last winter I finished putting together/repairing a VMF'ers 64.5. Lot's of minor stuff and a new drivers side floor pan. I think I billed him about 75-80 labor hours and he was happy that his car was no longer a garage ornament. It worked out good for me as it allowed me to work on a mustang and not spend any of my money! Instead I actually made a little side cash.

Today I had to take my glorified golf cart/Jeep Wrangler into town to get inspected/registered. At a friend of mines shop getting it inspected I asked him how his wife's 64.5 was coming along. It's been sitting in one of the back bays of the building for years. He finally realized/admitted to himself that he would never find the time to rebuild the car and asked me if I was interested in taking on the job.

The car is mostly complete as I believe she was driving it at one time...... maybe back in H.S. ...... 30 years ago...... it's been at least 10 years since the car has moved under it's own power. The drivetrain is removed. The interior is intact. The body looks solid. It should be a fun project.

Now I just need to clear some crap out of my garage/shop to get started on it. That could take some time. A couple months maybe. I need to get my son's car out of there and possibly into a storage locker before I do anything.

Same thing here.
I have been asked to work on a mustang.
Getting payed for something you like to do , save some money for your own project.
Life is great !!

I'll store it for free and even come and get it!

Sounds like a fun project, the 64.5...

I got to enjoy building my daughter's '67 on her dime. I did give her well over $1,000 worth of parts for free, but that was a whole lot less than SHE spent! LOL

Judging by your excitement, it must be a coupe! :beat

Yeah, it's a Coupe.... and a 6 cylinder one at that. That's okay though as it won't be my money that's getting sunk into it. What's bothering me is if I remember correctly it has a white vinyl top. Dealing with vinyl tops is a PITA.

More good news though....

My buddy at this shop runs a rather large wrecker service. I think he runs 3-4 wreckers and has a LARGE impound lot. Within the impound lot is usually a bunch of wrecks/junk, but on occasion a nice vehicle will turn up. About 5 years ago I bought a 1995 Jeep Wrangler out of impound and it needed only a fuel pump and a passenger side fender. I doubled my money on it after driving/owning it for a year or two. I "just missed" a '92 GT that sold for $200 and the lady who bought it drove it home.... 300 miles away. Still kicking myself over that one. There was an impounded '96 Cobra that the bank wanted two much money for, but I negotiated with them for a few weeks before finally giving up.

I noticed in the impound lot today that there is a '65 Coupe that looks as if it could drive out of there with a couple tires thrown on it. It was towed in yesterday as an illegally parked/abandoned vehicle. My name and phone number is penciled onto the impound paperwork and hopefully something will pan out from this.

Photo's..... yeah, I'll try and get some tomorrow.

+1

I have a couple at church hounding me to restore their '73 Grande for them. Its a nice car, woman's father bought it new so it's been in the family this whole time.

Only problem I have taking the job is even if I don't charge them any labor at all they will be quickly upside down in this, which I've told them, and they are ok with due to the sentimental value. I'm thinking about working a deal with them to do the drive train and underside of the car, take it to their painter of choice and have them work a deal with the painter directly, and then I'll finish the interior after the paint is done.

Buy the 65 next week, don't take no crap off of anyone. Tell em your takin it. Fix it up over the winter and spring and I'll expect you to be driving it to MBB III. Now, get to work.

GABBY, kick him in the butt and get him movin!

Buy the 65 next week

Unfortunately it's not that simple. I'd have bought it yesterday if I could have. The impounded '65 will have to sit unclaimed for 10 days before the shop can place a mechanic's lien on it. There are some other.... longer.... time periods and paperwork that must be filed through DMV before the shop can "auction" it off.

If it get's to that point, the "auction" lasts approx. 2 minutes and I'll be the only one bidding. It's easier for me that way.

The impounded '65 is really too nice to just sit unclaimed. The owner is probably a young Marine that is deployed. Once he finds out his car has been impounded I'm sure he'll take the steps necessary to not lose the car. What I'm hoping is that he's broke and wants to get rid of the car on the cheap. If the price is right I'll jump on it.

Section 537 of the Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act states that without a court order, a person holding a lien on the property or effects of a service member cannot foreclose or enforce any lien during any period of military service by the member and for 90 days afterward.

Just be careful if it is a Marines car. The towing company can get into a lot of trouble if they auction his car off. This was a big problem during my first two deployments. They towing companies know now so it isn't as much of problem anymore.

If it wasn't for a broke Marine with a drinking problem I wouldn't have my car.

My buddy is well aware of the laws involving impounded vehicles.

Here are some pictures of the impounded Coupe.

You should ask him to roll the drivers side window up to prevent any damage in case you are able to pick it up. Hate to see it sitting in the elements like that.

Not a bad looking '66 there, even in the yellow. Now the wait to see what happens.....

I initially thought it was a '66.... When I wlaked into their office on friday and brought up the "66 out in the impound lot", everyone in the office stated it was a '65. Upon closer inspection today it's definitely a '66 6 cylinder car.

Rick, I'll do that. No telling though how long it's been open like that.

Next to the '66 is another late model Mustang that I didn't notice until today. Written in paint across the back glass are the words "BUY ME PLEASE" and a phone number.... and now the car is impounded.... could be another deal with this car.

Dave, are you sure that belongs to a Marine? I don't see any DOD stickers on the windshield. Here in VA all the decals are in the top center of the windsheld, can't tell if there was any low and right (looking at the front).

Alot of military bases do not require the DOD stickers. Seems to be an option decided by the base.

Dave, are you sure that belongs to a Marine?

I'm sure of nothing.

I assume that it belongs to a Marine since it was removed from the base. I suppose it is possible that it belongs to a civilian, but why would a civilian leave a '66 Coupe in an abandoned condition aboard the base?

Also remember that it could have gotten onto the base with a day pass.... or towed on as a project car..... and then the owner never insured it/got it running to obtain a permanent WS decal.

We'll see if anything comes of this as the days wear on.

Pete, it's not optional on our local base.

Nothing like a mandatory DoD sticker on a car to identify your vehicle to possible terrorists. Dumb policy...really stupid.
