I still think you have timing off and/or weak spark. It is VERY easy to fire off ether. Gasoline not so much. Since the timing is all electronically controlled (as far as my brain knows) if you have the right signal and you have the valve timing correct low voltage to the ignition system seems the logical cause.
Safe to say the cam was not set up in correct position as the cause of the damage?
