Which Stereo?

I know I'm a glutton for punishment asking you jokers for an honest answer but I just want you to feel that your advice is as important to me as before

:craz

What are you running? Knowing the wife, I should lean towards something that can take an Ipod for her book on tapes for the long journeys to Knotts. Need to have some good power in order to out do the loud exhaust. Maybe I need to get off my butt and go to our local car stereo shop?

The selection is wide open. Not hard to find one with an aux jack in the front. I went with a Kenwood but it's pretty much gonna be what look do you like as the options are ridiculous.

Yeah, I would do what Craig did and just get a free one with custom install at a major car event, seems a lot easier and cheaper than the other options :ep

Being a glutton for punishment I picked up a bastardised original faceplate (someone already drilled holes in it) on fleabay for cheap and dremeled it to fit a Pioneer DIN.

The Alpine in the '66 works pretty good but I find no Ipod jack. The Kenwood I sold with the other car was good also and it had the jack.

Get he a Kindle with ear phones and she will not have a problem with the outside noise, nor will you.

Yes, this is a truthful comment, not meant as a joke......it's real Craig so you can believe this......... :lol

I ordered mine online from Crutchfield. You can select all the features you want, and the chassis size (The DIN size fits great in a modified bezel) and they'll give you a list to select from.

I've got an Apline in my mustang, and it has a usb port on the back side for my ipod. And the wife has a Kenwood in her car with a front usb port. Both of our cars, I did not want to hack up the dash for the radio. So, I bought the kit that mounts the radio under the dash.

you might want to get either an Alpine or Eclipse. but if you want to have one that is going to be loud enough for the exhaust and still sound clear. Maybe look into a 4 channel Amp. I have seen people install them in the glovebox or under the dash. I am sure you dont want to hack up shag. wish i was still living in the bay area and installing. I would say bring beer and I would work with you on installing it. ...if push comes to shove but an extra radio trim piece and cut one up for a din sized radio and have one for the stock radio

I am in total agreement.

I will be doing the same with Fred once the time comes. I personally will be leaving my AM stereo exactly where it is and add a aftermarket unit in the the glovebox. You can always purchase a longer cable and run the iPod/iPhone jack out of the back of the dash so its easy to access while driving and you can tuck it back behind the dash once you get to the car show. Some will say its a hassle having the stereo in the glovebox (due to not being able to easily access the controls) but most aftermarket stereos come with remotes and if your using the iPod/iPhone you control the volume and everything else from the iPod/iPhone anyways.

That's what I was going to do... keep the original radio and find someplace to put the aftermarket one. I was thinking of something like this maybe that mounts under the dash and can be painted to match the interior.

Ahhh, but with the '67-'68, you can hack up the REMOVABLE bezel to your hearts content, because a replacement is about $50.

Frank

Agreed with Frank. I have 3 67-68 bezels which I can hack up. Just bought a Pioneer DIN for $90 via a local stereo store which was $25 better than any internet store. If I don't like it, I can always change it without doing any major dash modification.

I went with the Retrosound Model 1 to use the original holes in the console face. Has ipod/mp3/satellite/usb drive/SD card, etc, etc.

NPD delivery should be here today, will let you know how it works in case you want to go back to the knob style bezel.

Not an overly attractive model there Sam...

If I wanted your opinion, Rick, I would have asked for it and then cried about it when I didn't like what you had to say.

I like the black faced one myself. I am waiting for the review before I order the unit. I like the features that it has and the cost isn't terrible. I have a 66 and I am not thrilled about putting a unit in the glovebox even though I have one to use. I prefer to have the in dash set-up and use a flashdrive or a mp3 player.

I saw a new bezel somewhere that is made to fit the DIN radios...

I also saw a site for a guy who will take the guts out of your stock radio and replace them with new stuff and an IPOD jack....

I like that for the 65, but I am thinking of installing everything but the radio and using a radio delete plate and an IPOD.

Unless things have changed, that bezel is made of plastic and costs twice as much as the metal one.

It's not too tough to cut the metal bezel.

Frank

Cut one of mine yesterday with a dremmel and circular cut off blade. It took a long time but turned out really nice. Maybe I'll take a pic? Hmmmmmmm maybe.
