HEfkCU9.gif I am looking to find what real people here actually use. As some of you know, I am developing a stand-alone programmable ignition controller in my spare time, allowing users like us here to convert existing mechanical distributors to easily apply any timing curve you like, with your phone, tablet or laptop, and output true high-energy sparks.

Additionally (or perhaps more important), it will allow the use of popular monitoring, logging and tuning diagnostic programs to make tuning both easier and more effective at any level. This poll is specific in order to ensure the majority of distributors that are being used by active hobbyists and racers are included.
 
I used the Edelbrock integrated system with a MSD coil painted to look factory-ish. :)

PerTronix Flame-Thrower Ignitor II billet distributor and PerTronix Flame-Thrower II ignition coil were in the car when I bought it.

They meet my needs and have been trouble-free so far, so no need to change anything.
 
Holley Smart Coils run by a Holley HP ECU. Im not sure if that helps you in your research as I can change the timing in the ECU. Good luck with your development!
 
I'm running Duraspark on two cars (one full ford, the other with a MSD distributor), and EEC-IV TFI on another.

Edit: I also have two cars that are points & will stay fully stock (appearing).

71 Mach 1 - MSD 6AL w/MSD ProBillet distributor
71 XR-7 - Chinese HEI that'll be swapped to points or a D-spark w/HEI module when I get a minute.
Everything else is points.
 
Currently a Duraspark distributor and an MSD digital 6 box in the '67. I have dual point I might use in the '69 just for fun. Maybe.

FOLLOW-UP Q: For those running TFI (@sheza65, @67DropTop, etc) are you using the full EFI or just TFI with a carb?

FOLLOW-UP Q: For those with mechanical advance; have you tuned your advance to optimal timing for your specific engine and fuel? If it were much easier to do that, and with guiding info for what really is best for your engine lifespan, power, economy, etc, would you consider doing that?

* Note - for some, if it 'runs' without stalling, hesitation, hiccups, overheating, etc, it's "good enough". If that's you, that's OK, and let me know.

* Note - if you desire more features, such as active Idle Stability, power-shift rev control, launch control, valet mode, choke-less carb warmup rpm control, overheating countermeasures, rpm/shift lights, integrated wide-band O2, radiator fan control, fuel swap ("crappy gas" switch), distributorless coil packs, etc – let me know – as I am sorting through possible features for 'required' versus 'desired' functions. Crazy ideas and requests always welcome! :cool:

On my 67 200 6 cyl i run a Hyperspark dist along with a flame thrower coil thru a MSD 6AL BOX . Ya its a little out side that 6 cylinder box . But it gets the job done .

I've done it several ways: full EFI, without the PCM & locked timing, and using the PCM to control timing while carbureted.

Yes. My issue with the one phone tunable distributor that I am aware of is that is seems quite expensive at $400+. A module that could be incorporated with factory or aftermarket distributors would be neat at the correct price point.

A lot of the desired features you mentioned are either in the Sniper or the Dakota Digital dash in my vert but i don't use any of them . Who know i get a chance to work on the fuel problem maybe i will use some of them .
Any body but but me ever find you have more car stuff you need to do but don't ?

I’m running the full EEC-IV system. As I’m mostly stock for now. I have Heads, intake and cam sitting on a shelf. But I’m not sure if I’ll ever install them.
 
Those with EFI mostly have this ignition capability already, although tuning and tuning guidance is often limited, difficult (EEC) or expensive, limiting use or effectiveness. That's a bummer as TFI is an outstanding system, the basis for some aftermarket distributors, and stand-alone control would make it a top choice while cheap for us. TFI module not required (but can be used if you already have one), and steel gears optional for roller cams.

DuraSpark is solid (and even more common as the basis for many aftermarket distributors ;)), inexpensive, optional steel gear, while user-tunability would release all it's potential with clicks. While points are actually usable for this control, and the points then last seemingly forever; an added module like a $20 Aliexpress 1281 (like PerTronix, but only acts as a sensor) makes it zero maintenance with max energy plus higher rpm.

My effort is primarily aimed at those using carbs, mechanical EFI, or power adders, etc, but want the important advantages of tunable timing, and things mech advance simply can't do. However, options are extensive, so there could be a version to use an Explorer engine's excellent distributorless system as-is but with a carb. Or use 8 Godzilla coils on a 289. Lots of directions this could go, from v1 Basic make-it run and adjustable, to crazy stuff... on a budget.

There are many viewpoints on this, from those that don't really care but want things like using cheaper regular gas on road trips, or longer life between valve jobs; to those that are pushing for max power or peak MPG, or a feature (performance or fun) like rpm-hold during WOT power-shifting, or nitrous, etc. As spark enables pulling the energy from fuel, and every bit as important to tune along with the fuel and conditions; this project is to make that capability as accessible, easy and effective, using parts you have, while a fraction of the cost of commercial kits (if they exist for your combo). I appreciate all the help in pursuing this! :cool:

Same set up here and no issues either. I put the OEM dual point in a box up on a shelf
