What did you buy?

Not AI, just condescending assholes. Claimed Stapler and I were "banning too many spammers". I shitchoo not. Also they are leveraging Google hits on the site to pimp the forum to advertisers. The reason for those hits is so much great info shared by folks like 22GT and Woodchuck who are walking encyclopedias. So info being shared among friends there is essentially being monetized. Not something I'm happy about or comfortable with so I pulled out. As did everyopne but Laurie.

Upside. Now that I no longer feel obligated to check the forum fires several times a day I don't feel like getting on there much. 25 years is a long time. While on my stool in the shop listening music, piddling on my trail bike getting it ready for a weekend ride I thought to myself "THIS is my happy place, always has been. Here. Doing stuff like this, not on my ass infront of a screen." So I've decided to consciously pull back from the internet in general. Still need it for work, reference, fun, etc but no endless reading of forums and video watching. So the last few nights after work I've been spending that screen time out in the shop putting an MSD box on the '67 in place of its Duraspark II. With no one telling me what to do and how to do it.

I'm staying as a spy.

I was a moderator at VMF when Bob owned it, and he turned on me, removing my moderator privileges. I saw what was going on to other people (remember Mt. Fuji?), and decided not to post there any more, except for my business.

This forum is pretty much undermoderated, as there's little need to do so, except for the occasional spammer.

A delayed one. Wife says at the Autofair I almost always find a "deal of the day". One time it was new roof skin for the '69, another time a little ATV for cheap, etc. None this time. I thought. For a few years now I've found I really like cast iron on the rare occasions I cook. At some point I discovered an old company called Griswold made some cast skillets that were lighter weight. They accomplished this (apparently) with precision molds that made the pans thinner overall. Plus they are smoother and not rough cast. I've been wanting one but apparently everyone else does too and they are collector's items. Every one I've run into was priced stupid high.

So this fella had a pair of rusty old skillets laying on his tarp. Told me $5 each. Neither had any casting marks at all that I could see. Generally non-marked ones are cheap Taiwan stuff. Being surface rusted they could be a year old, ten years, who knows. Griswolds all have pretty deep markings on the bottom. "Griswold", a big cross symbol in a circle, "Erie PA" all pretty unmistakable. These were not those by any means. But one felt right. It had the light weight and slimness to it. Just felt like a good quality piece. I figured even if it was a Taiwan-made on it seemed like it would cook well. Five bucks poorer and thought little more of it.

Week and a half later I took a notion to scuff it up and get an idea of what it will take to clean it up and get it seasoned. Scuffed the bottom with some scothbrite and there appeared an "E". What? No! Scuffed some more and the rest appeared "Erie". Before they were were Griswold they marked their pans just "Erie". More scuffing revealed a "10" for the size and "710" for the series. Turns out I bought a 1905 skillet in primo condition that's selling about everywhere for at least $400! Shaaaawing!
Now the problem is I'm about afraid to cook in a $400 pan. Also a downside is that now I've found the freaking holy grail no more hunting cast iron. I am NOT collecting iron skillets.

Not cleaned up or anything yet. Once I discovered what I had I figured I better approach the resoration with a bit more care.

See the lettering? No? Me neither, but it's there.

By the way, don't you louts ever buy anything interesting?
Be sure to post pictures once it's restored.

We did have some wild years in the beginning though!

Think again Gypsy; there is a thread about loosing our "beloved moderators" that is currently 4 pages and 67 posts long:

You are all missed my friend
Wow! Read that thread to the end. Glad I stayed out of it. What a shit show. The old mods would have shut it down pages back. Reading it reminds me exactly why we shut such threads down. All it did was generate animosity between otherwise amicable people. Jeezus. The forum rules I wrote (which I note were hastily erased when I stepped down) were never really about politics, sex, or racism. They were about people reacting badly to others stepping on their closely held core beliefs and making an endrun around such things so everyone could focus on what we had in common instead. I'm amazed the new administration seems to have no freaking idea of how guided social interaction works. This new mod they brought in is apparently a jackass.

Just sad and a little depressing. I haven't posted there in a week. Starting to feel like I just may not post there anymore after reading that thread.

Back to the regularly scheduled topic...

As I always do when working on a project I got distracted by the ensuing mess and made an attempt to get better organized. I thought about making a cabinet out of wood but wood doesn't really hold up as well as metal and it would have been a lot heavier. I went to Amazon and priced out all the stuff to make this from scratch but the total came relatively close to what just buying the one StupidSimpleTools sells and it would save me a ton of cutting and drilling and metal braking, etc. to just buy the dang thing. All together with the bins it gets pricey but for the function and durability hard to beat. Plus it matches the color scheme of my garage set-up!

I'm using the top three large ones to house all my grinding wheels, flap discs and the like in one. Another is stuffed with quick lock style 2" and 3" sanding discs. And the last is loaded up with cutting wheels and other metal working type consumables.
The 8 singles are packed with hardware. It is unbelievable the amount of bolts, nuts, washers, and assorted stuff I amass. I've got one packed with grade 8. Another with stainless. A couple for all the little #6, #8 and #10 hardware. Then one for 1/4", one for 5/16" and one for 3/8". The last one catches the bigger stuff, metric and a few odd balls bins in it too.
I think I'm going to have to expand it before too long but for now it helped clear up some space on the benches and even a couple tool chest drawers. Its on casters too which is nice as I can move it around for now until I can find it a proper wall space.

Have to see how it works over time but for now I think I like it.
