Went fishing with success. Now another fuel filter idea

Bite Me, You think you're good at fishing? Beat this!!

Yesterday, I drained the remaining 1+ gallon of gas and removed the sending unit again to start fishing for the loose sending unit filter sock. With my small flashlight and little flexible mirror I was able to see the sock sitting in one of the back corners. With my long pincher tool I was able to reach in and grab that bad boy.

I put it back on the sender and was surprised how loose it fit.

That filter will not be used again. So here's my question. Both my engine builder and the Ferrari guys next to me have said to not use a filter sock inside the tank, but instead put an clear inline filter down river (fishing jargon) right after the sending unit. This would allow you to see and remove most of the crap that the gas pump is putting into your tank by simply replacing the filter. Has anyone done this or see a reason not to do it?

Seen it, done it when I had the same problem on a different type vehicle. Works good and the filter can be placed anywhere it is handy. I used the tube style clear filter.

I installed an in-line fuel filter just after my tank. It's mounted under the left rear seat, next to the frame rail. Keep in mind that I don't have a hard line, I used braided fuel hose, so it was easy to install where ever I wanted.

Good idea . Do it !!!

Did you get high when sniffing at the opening of the fueltank ??

If you leave off the tank sock, Do place a filter right after the tank nipple. (keeps the crap out of the line and the pump)
But, Something to think about. The pump your using is a suction/pressure type. If your going to leave in the filter from the pump to the carb,
I would use a larger micron sized filter at the tank.
Removing the pump to carb filter using screens at the fuel rail connection, I would use smaller/standard filter at the tank location.
Having 2 inline filters could hinder the amount of fuel flowwing to the carb under upper rpm ranges.

If Shag ever gets a chance to run up there........ :lol

I run a second filter on both my cars, right as the gas comes out of the tank, and before it goes to the electrical fuel pump next to it.

I think it's a great idea, myself. Both of my cars presumably still have the socks on them, But they do have an in-line filter at the tank. I've never had any fuel starvation problems, but I'm running the Holley Red Barrel electric pump in both cars.

I spent a fair amount of time under the tank of Shag today and determined I will need to shorten the hard line a little to fit a filter between the sending unit and the hardline. So, when I get back from Knotts, I'll drop the rear portion of the hard line and have it shortened slightly and flared at the tip. I'll run it with out a sock on the sending unit but with a 20 micron filter both at the tank as well as between the pump and carb.
