Weird Noises Before a Road Trip?

DEL65

Of The Morons
I swear, a few times a year I drive from Modesto to Sacramento, which is about 150 miles round trip, and never have a problem. But it seems that a week or so before long road trips like Knotts, 600 + miles, and Pismo Beach next week, 500+ miles, every little squeak, rattle, and tick I hear makes me anxious.

My car, although imaginary, has never let me down and is reliable. Even if I had an issue on the road, I'm surrounded by great mechanics, I have a bitchin' set of tools, and my trusty credit card. Am I alone with these thoughts?

No

Even though my car has never let me down on the road, I expect it to. It has caused me to miss sessions at the track (blown tires, tossed lifter, leaking fuel cell), but has been flawless when I've taken it on cruises. My biggest worry is that I plan correctly so I pass the most gas stations!

Everytime I try to take my car to work this year something has happened. I live about 40 miles from work one way.
First it was a fuel leak, then an electrical problem. Stopped for gas and no crank! Towed home again. :roulette

I can take the car for a cruise or anywhere and no problems ,but when I want to take it to work something always seems to happen.

Now I am just paranoid too!

John:

These cars are supposed to squeek, rattle and tick!!!!! Just turn up the radio!! :yikes

Seriously, check the important stuff like tires, fan belts, hoses and fluids. Grease the front suspension and driveshaft u-joints and you should be good for the Pismo trip. Carry a good set of roadside tools, some duct tape, a AAA card, and a cell phone.

If still in doubt, see your doctor about some tranquilizers.............. :naug

Same experience when driving the Stang to KCIR last weekend. Started it up to head out and thought for sure I heard a tapping noise that I had never heard before.

Have driven several times since and have not heard a thing. Getting old and losing your hearing may be a good thing when it comes to these cars.

Just paranoid when you get ready to go anywhere new.

Not so much weird, but annoying. I simply tell her to STFU.

John, just bring plenty of beer or other spirits with you. That way if you DO break down, we can drink them in hopes of actually seeing your car to work on it with you.

Actually, I tend to have the opposite problem, in that I hear something and think it's not really there (i.e. header bolts abandoning the car at Knott's) or smelling something and ignoring it (i.e. sanding block stuck in the headers smoking up a storm), or ... oh, you get the idea.

John, half the thrill of these cars is thier unpredictable ways, you just never know for sure if your going to make it, that along with the smell of oil and fuel, it just doesn't get any better than this. like you said a set of tools and a trusty credit card and victory will be yours.

Get this!!!!
Today I start cleaning up Red for MITM -09. Decide I need to disconnect spark plug wire #8 in order to tighten up up exhaust bolts. Forget to reconnect the wire to the plug. Start up Red to take it for a test drive and it runs like CRAP. Half way down the block I realize I forgot to connect the spark plug wire to #8. DOH!!!!!!

Hi everyone, thanks for taking time to post. I'll mellow out some more, and like Mach514 says, I'll embrace the adventure. Johnpro's words of wisdom (have plenty of beer on hand) also rings true. Now, back to work on my CD.
