Vibration in the steering

janschutz

Corn Hauler
I have a occasional vibration (shaking of the steering wheel). I seldom happens but when it does, it is always at highway speeds. IT feels like the whole front end is going to shake apart. If I pull over and stop, when I resume, it is ok. all components are new (this is the mustang I finished last year for my wife - Aug 2011 COTM). Where and how do I start checking this out.

68 coupe, 302, power steering, factory disk brakes.

Do a quick check when you take the tires off. Look for a worn suspension part or a loose gear. The next thing I would do is "Road Force" balance the tires and rims. Most problems I have had and seen lately have been related to a crappy, poor quality tires. I had a new set of Goodyear Eagle F1's that one was 146+ pounds off and the other was 46, both were bad. Actually, I think I hold the state record for a new "High End" crappy tire. It's sad but the front tires I had the trouble were made in the U.S. The rear was from Germany and they balanced easy. The replacement tires were made in "CHINA" which made me PUKE, but I have to give it to them, they balanced within a few pounds with no weights from the start. It still haunts me to know that I had to settle for :censored Chinease tires from an American company that I thought would be made here to start with. Use the "Road Force" Luke and feel the difference..

I agree. have seen some weird things lately with tires. a quick check would be to rotate or swap the fronts from your other car & see if it changes. i assume you have already checked the pressures? this time of year with the weather fluctuating from from warm to cold seems to make pressures drop for some reason. the mrs. car felt funny the other day & had 20lb in one & 26 in the other.

Tire pressure is fine (Checked already).

I was going to rotate the tires. When the passenger side was up on jack stands, there was some slop in the front passenger tire. Looking under the Mustang while my wife was shaking the wheel , The power steering rack was moving up and down. The is play in the idler arm (not the mount points but the ball joint).

Looks like I need another idler arm (This one has less than 5000 miles on it. Who makes the best replacement idler arm?

Look on rockauto.com website. They usually have the cheapest price for moog parts.

"DO I EVER" love Rock Auto! On things I have compared lately they have been on average from 50% to 70% cheaper than the local chain auto parts stores. And there's no idiot to deal with.

My local independent parts store was able to beat rock autos price. Just bring the part number and price. Worth asking and getting the parts sooner. I used rock auto once and had a terrible experience. Once was enough, never again.
