used original parts

I Don't Care. Do you?

As I have mentioned before, I am pretty much replacing every part on of my car. This leaves me with boxes of original parts that are in very good condition. Everything from window crank mechanisms to trims pieces to door handles to air cleaner assemblies. Is there a real market for this kind of stuff? Most everything is reproduced these days but as must of us know, not all the new parts are of near the quality of the originals.

A look on E-bay shows a lot of listings for this type of thing and I am just curious if it is worth the time and effort to photograph, list and ship this stuff. What does everyone think?

depends- whats ur time worth? do u like to haggle, shipping is a pain, paypal is a ripoff ect ect. take it to a local swapmeet if u enjoy these things. craigs list is a deal but if ur looking for top dollar-a waste of time. i like to answer adds on the mustang forums if someone is looking for something i have and i like to price them at a bargin so it will sell and the buyer is happy so its ur call. wes

Really, it comes down to I don't want to just toss in the trash stuff others may want or could use. At the same time, I don't want to have boxes of this stuff cluttering up the garage anymore. Helping someone else get what they need would be the main driver as opposed to getting rich.

So back to the main point. Does anybody really want original door handles, etc. or should I just pitch 'em?

I continue to face this dilema...

I know some of the extra parts I have are worth 100s of dollars. But to be honest it really is not worth my time and effort to deal with it unless it is something I am certain is worth $500 or more. Perhaps if I were at a different stage of my life my answer would change.

After I completed my last project, I called up a local Mustang restoration shop and told them I had a bunch of used original parts in good condition and that I did not want them to end up in a land fill and I did not want any money. They gladly accepted my parts. I would rather help a small business and have my parts end up on cars than see them be melted down or buried.

As I near completion of my current project, I am sure I will do the same.

Good luck,
-Rory

I'll gladly accept wiring harnesses in exchange for some cash.

Mid,

When I get finished figuring out all my wiring you have dibs on the original harnesses. I'm re-wiring everything and going modern fuse block etc. I'm going to relocate the main electrical "center" from under the dash to an enclosure under a custom rear seat delete.

after driving my car a lot and having used some repop stuff, I ended up either replacing with a good original part. The repop stuff looks good new and sometimes even works when new but often doesn't hold up to use like the original stuff. I don't throw anything away. I have a lot of "driver" quality stuff in totes and under the workbench.
On the other hand though, this stuff takes up a lot of space and often someone looking for a small part doesn't pay much for it so you won't get rich by keeping it and it could take a long time to get rid of it all.
I don't really have any good advise other than if you can organize a good way to store stuff and find it later, it's nice to hang on to it. Then when somebody really needs something you have, it feels good to be able to help them out.

Donating or giving them away is a noble endeavor and a way of "giving back" to the brotherhood that is the classic Mustang community. A different approach to selling a bulk of accumulated goods is grouping them. Guys will bid on the lot even though they only need the door handles but they will be bidding against guys that may be after the door trim you included in the lot. Item for item you will probably net less than you would selling them individually but you do get them moved faster and some will likely turn back up in the recirculation market.

I wonder about the guys I see on eBay asking high prices for rusty original bolts or a popular OEM part that's available in reproduction. They run them on ebay for months. Do they EVER find the guy that needs that part so bad that it actually sells for their asking price?

I'm always glad to help out with giving away parts or offering them marked down but I do have a compelling sense of offsetting the costs of the new or better condition parts I purchased to replace them.

Post a list of what you have here in the classifieds. You might not make a fortune, but you'll probably clear out some stuff. Reassembling my car, I'm always missing or looking for a part.

LoL. Work has turned my brain into moosh but saved some cells for Fred. I heard rumors of awesome So-Cal classic car parts swap meets but haven't had the time to inquire.

You should seriously consider restoring some of those original parts. Don't get sucked into the mentality that you can "easily" replace everything by ordering parts out of a catalog. As mentioned, there are many repro parts that will look good at first and work ok, but then will fail quicker than an oem original piece. Or, the repro part doesn't fit or function at all and then you're out that cost as you put the original back on.

Think about what it would take to restore some of these parts. Lots of resources on this forum and others to help get you there.
