It's Saturday...and...here I am
The nurse came yesterday but she was not
the regular one they have assigned ...just wanted to gather info
and make sure we had meds correct and make sure the house
didn't have any obstacles in his walking path.
The therapist has not shown up or called yet
It seems that the hospital broke his bottom bridge
and pulled the eye teeth that it was adhered
to out with it. We did let them know about it
but...who listens.
What else could happen !!!!
So...eating is certainly a new problem...and we
don't yet have a local dentist.
He really is too weak to go out anyway...so...I'll wait till Monday
and make appt with a local dentist.
Nurse said it will take 6-8 months for him to get his
appetite back to where it was. He's lost about 10 lbs
but does "not" look gaunt. He doesn't eat much at
all...just a few spoonfuls here and there.
He fights using the walker...but...I remind him
that a fall could send him back to the hospital
Needless to say...he darts his eyes at me...but
then uses the damn thing.
A medicine that they gave him for gout caused
him all sorts of havoc...so the nurse called the doc
while she was here and got him pulled off of it
The druggist told me it's a gout medicine that has been
around since the 1940's....but...the manfacturer (Takeda) found
a loophole in the law and got it out of generic and back
on patent for the next 10 years. Druggist said that
folks that were paying $3 are not paying $300
I paid $56 for 10 pills (Walgreens had run out of them
so they only had 10 to give me). Lucky me...since he
can't take them now anyway. (It's called: Colcrys 0.6 mg)
They did keep him on the alpurinal (for gout) which is for
maintainance...but his knees are still filled with fluid and
hopefully if will start to disappear.
But he's home...wearing his ball-cap while laying in bed
and sleeping alot since night time sleeping has not been
as it should be. Guess the stiffness wakes him up.
I'm grateful he does not ask for pain meds...so I guess
the healing has begun.
It's snowing here today in our area of North Carolina
and boy am I glad that he's home and I'm not trying
to navigate to the hospital in this mess.
I'm just learning to use the GPS and I'm tired of hearing
her say: RE-CALCULATING in that sqeaking voice !!!!
I'll update again after his follow-up with surgeon
on Wed: Feb 20th.
So...Miss Gypsy and Uncle Vinny are back home

Toni, it's really great that you are taking the time to update us on Uncle Vinny the way you do. I picture you upstairs with an oil lamp burning as you type away. Vinny, you better behave yourself. I know your struggling, but your wife is struggling too. Don't make me send Sanborn up there to wrestle with you! All kidding aside, I hope your feeling better. It sounds as though you are making some progress. We here are all glad to hear things are moving in a positive direction!

Thought you all knew...Uncle Vinny has done "all"
the cooking for the past 17 plus years. No way can
I meet his standard. Being raised in foster homes
and orphanage...I never had the opportunity to learn
this 'cooking" stuff !!!!
You know, he can eat something in a restaurant,
and go home and duplicate it to perfection.
Guess that's the artist in him.
I have the Kellogg's Special K Protein drinks in
the fridge...but...since he had to drink this stuff
on the 3 day liquid diet 'before" the surgery...he
snubs his nose at it. Says it "Stinks".
I forgot to mention that his back is in bad shape
as well. He struggled to help pick up Miss Gypsy before
his surgery and he pulled something that is still
very painful for him.
He says his back can't support his body. Good Grief
something else that needs to be addressed. He
can't stand up straight yet without a yelp in pain
and it frustrates him
HA...I nearly screwed up the hard boiled eggs
that he had me make...he said they had a "touch
of green" which means I boiled them too long..but
he said they were ok...not great...but ok.
Glad I've got cans of soup on hand..those I can heat up

I have been following your reports on Uncle Vinny. I really have not really had anything to say, just my prayers to help in the recovery.
The headboard of our bed is full of little boxes of past pets. So what you had done with Miss Gypsy is like just normal to me. Mom makes sure that Dad gets his Ensure every day, as his weight can be an issue. I wish that Dad could still use a walker, but his legs are too weak from the rigidity that comes from the Parkinson's. So he is in a wheelchair now. About your cooking skills, it has nothing to do with your upbringing. Some can and some cannot prepare food. My daughter can cook with the microwave and boil water. I have tried to teach her with no success. So like you she will have to find a man that can cook. Again thank you for the updates.

Glad to hear you're both working the problem and improving. We're now back stateside after our Hawaiian getaway. I'm looking forward to you two being out here in April - keep up the good work. Snow in NC? WTF?!?!?
