Trailer hitch

"tarafied1" said:
mine appears to bolt directly to the bumper itself. It's angled right at the ends like it would mate to the bumper angle, it is wide too...

Hhmmm... I'm not sure I'd trust towing a trailer with a hitch that was just bolted to the bumper brackets. Unless you were towing a tiny little trailer like this...

Most people frown on hitches....I look at it as a challenge. My '07 has one and the '66 might some day.

As for the trailer. I saw one that used the back (door post & back)of a Mustang and then they cut in the front grill and headlights in the front. Looked good and the owner said it took a bit of metal work but not to bad.

Those hitches towed some surprising loads but are really light duty. You could build your own receiver hitch attached to the frame rails. I have ideas for one if I ever get ambitious. By bolting enough of the structure to the car, it can become pretty sturdy.

I think the one Frank has and the one you have are different. Look how close Franks mounted to the fuel filler, yours looks wider, like it mounts to the bumper braket bolts.

I'll try to get a measurement of the distance between the mounting holes, and get a picture of my hitch tonight.

Frank

Well, mine looks nothing like yours after all. The mounting hole that I circled in the picture above is NOT the one for the hitch. I circled the correct mounting hole to the right of the other hole. Here are a few pictures of my hitch and a picture of the rear mounting bracket under the car.

The distance between the rear mounting holes is 5 3/8 inches. I guess I really have no reason to believe this was a dealer installed hitch.

Thanks Frank,
The mounting point in front of the gas tank looks like it might be in the same place.

This before pic of Laurie S's "Trouble" has a hitch that looks like my hitch.

The only useful purpose of a Mustang Coupe...right Dave Sanborn?

I won't deny that I was thinking this....

Craig,

Are you sure you want to install a trailer hitch onto the back of your E-Coupe?

I understand that it would serve a purpose, but so would curb feelers and/or a sunroof.

I have a friend from the hills of Tennessee that has installed a trailer hitch onto the rear of his $25k Harley. When he told me about it, I asked him if he was planning a long road trip on his bike.... thinking he had bought one of those little tricked out bike trailers (as pictured in an above response). Nope. Then why(?) I asked him. Because sometimes I git to checkin' on my horses and don't have my truck with me so I use my bike to haul the feed trailer around the farm.

This is not the best nor the intended use of a new Harley Davidson motorcycle.

IMO, the same logic applies to a classic Mustang.

Does the trunk not have enough room in it? What are you trying to carry in the trunk that would fit better in a towed trailer? The simplest solution is if there's not enough room, don't bring it.

I could see craig needing a little more room. From the posts I've read, he travels in the stang quite a bit, and he takes the family. Four people in the cabin, doesnt leave a lot of room for luggage on an overnight trip. Throw a full size spare in a coupe or fastback that has a relocated battery and an overnight bag (for one person), some tools, couple spare parts, cleaning supplies for the show and there is no room for anything you pick up at the swap meet, or a nice big trophy. Only other alternative would be the SWMBO in the minivan following behind or trailering the car to shows.

You nailed it Rick. We do take the Stang on road trips that can be overnighters or longer. There just isn't enough room for all the things you listed plus lawn chairs and coolers. I don't want to travel without a spare or tools, the other things could be limited I guess but we are spoiled American's! On shorter trips we have had the minivan too but my SWMBO (whatever that stands for, I assume my wife some how) like to be in the Stang with me and my boys are too young to drive or leave home by themselves. We are transplants too so no family to dump the kids on (they like to come anyway). I don't really want to tow with it but I don't want to trailer it even more. It's a driver and I'm having fun driving it!
On a positive note, I did find a trailer hith ball I want to use...

Looks kinda like this one that I snagged a pick of at the Truck Nationals show:

The ones I have seen that size were plastic.

As I said earlier, most frown on hitches on Mustangs.....but ya do what works for you. I have a hitch on my '07 and use it for a bicycle rack for the wifes wheel chair when needed. I also move my 16' open car hauler around the RV park when needed. I used Midlife's 5x10 trailer last week to pick up the three wheeled bicycle we bought. That was a 5 hour trip, one way. Cruised at the legal speeds all day.

On the return trip, thru Ocala, Fl., I came upon an '01 GT that wanted to show off his driving at lights. After two lights of him jumping on it hard and running a bit, I got tired of it and the "look" cuz I had a trailer on. Next light, I nailed it. I held about 1 car on him until I backed off. The look on his face was outstanding. We laughed which he saw because we also had the top down. Next light, him and his buddy took off real slow, kinda like a pup with his tail between his legs.

For light weight towing and fun driving at the same time.....it is well worth the odd looks.
