The price for a tilt column - OMG!!!

I really want to put a tilt (non-swing away) steering column in Shag but the prices I'm seeing on ebay, etc is freakin' out of this universe!!!

Surely one of you has one for a white elephant gift destined for California?

Buy an aftermarket model. I am sure they are less.

I bought one from on of the back east Vendors for $1,000 with all the extras and was pretty unhappy with it when it arrived. They just refunded my money today and I give them credit as I was only out the return shipping.

I found one locally for much cheaper but it needs work. So yes to your point they are really expensive for the stock columns.

Unless youre doing a stock restoration, I would look into the Retrofit Ididit columns. Direct bolt in with ford top shaft. Put one in my 65 and its a really nice unit.

+1 for the ididit. i like their stuff much better than flaming river. you won't be disappointed in the quality. sad thing is, a few years back i could have removed a factory tilt out of a part car free, but didn't know what they were worth so didn't bother with it. the car was sent to the crusher a few days later.

We have a tilt away that we are selling for a customer price is 1000.00 obo. Also have a 390 short block and c6 tranny out of the same car. Rich.

Just be thankful that you don't have the key in the column like us 70 and later cars. You at least have the option of the aftermarket columns like IDIDIT and Flaming River. I'd have to revert to like the 69 cars in order to install a tilt. Tilt for the one year only 70 cars are a hair under $1k for an unrestored one, so I feel your pain

Not sure but there are differences. The plate that bolts to the firewall is different, but if the diameter of the tubes are similar you could put the 70 plate on the 71-73. The main thing I'm not positive about is the nuts welded to the column for the dash brackets on the 71-73, and if they are similar. The other thing to check is the column length, which I think is different.

I agree that all I need to do is to wait for a good deal to happen. I have a couple feelers out so hopefully something good will come out of it. A local shop wants $650? uh....no thanks.

Craig, can you use a late model unit say 71-73 and strip the welded things and weld on the parts to make it fit the 68 you have?

Or maybe some other brand tilt column?

I see many hot rods with tilt wheels of many different makes and models. There is either a bunch of modifications or generic columns like the ididit.

If you use maybe a column from another Ford that will fit but may need to be modified.

+1 I have looking for a deal on 70 tilt column for years. I am to cheap to pay $1000+ for a steering column.

Today I'm going over to JeffTepper's place to play touchy feely with the tilt column in his car. Maybe I'll let Shag come along.

Also yesterday I got a tip regarding a local 68-69 tilt column for maybe $200. If it's in working order I might grab it.

fastmerc on the Boss302 forum restores tilt columns, in case there is a part that may not be working on that column. Not sure what he charges though. He may be a member on VMF but am not sure (since you aren't on the Boss forum).

jeez thats pricy for a tilt column i have a 69 tilt column i would be happy to get around $150 for it but one snag im in the u.k.
