Suggestions, Comments and Help!

My mechanic friend came over (I text him the pictures of the intake this morning, his ?, did you put any chemical on the gasket to secure it?) after looking at it he's sure that the Edelbrock Gasgacinch glue is not good for the Fel-Pro gaskets and it is breaking them down.

Edelbrock's intake instructions,
"NOTE: To ensure maximum performance and a proper seal, Edelbrock gaskets which are specifically designed and manufactured for use with Edelbrock parts must be used. They do not mention to use their glue.

I guess the fix is going to be the same Fel-Pro gaskets a thin-thin coat of RTV on the head surface and a nice bead on the ends. Hope it lasts.

I can't believe I drove :steer the whole Hot Rod Power Tour, more than 3500 miles, many drives to shows, cruises with this happening in the engine. I think I was real lucky and feel blessed.

Gasgacinch is an "old school" product so I am not surprised it affected the modern gasket materials. It worked great with old "paper" type gaskets but things have changed. As long as you use studs to guide/hold the gaskets you don't need any RTV other than if you use it to make the end seals.

Larry, the dowel pins (sleeves) that I refer to are the ones that hold the heads in the correct location.
Not the intake pins in your pictures.
From those pic's I see a 351C ports, I know for a fact that if the 4 head locator sleeves are not used when installing the heads on the block it will cause the problem your having now.

Also when installing the intake, Align the bolt holes with the gasket (not the ports) and Hand start ALL of the bolts first and toke in 3-4 sessions till done.

Thanks, I'm sure they're there,I somewhat remember putting the heads on and having to make sure they lined up on the pins.
I cleaned the old gasket off the heads and slid the intake on, nice tight fit at the heads and no more than 1/16th" front and back on the valley.

I would not use the print-o-seal gaskets, FE's have the same issue with that gasket. Get a stahdard felpro or Mr. Gasket & follow the above advise for sealing ends & tq.

Thanks for the suggestion. What do you think about the Metal valley pan and thin gaskets?
sorry for the late reply, I do have the metal valley pan gasket from Ford Motorsports on my 429. No issues now. I do think maybe the gasket broke down from something. Mine seamed to just be a poor seal. I am glad you didn't have any issues on the Power Tour!!!

Wow Larry, something sure did a number on those gaskets. I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions to add, but I place the blame squarely on our wives for thrashing your car on Woodward lol.

I don't have much to offer to this post but I can say that.......clearing a crowded elevator is a cinch when you take 1 tsp of Gas-ga-cinch 30 minutes prior to.

:thu

I did a google search on "splitting intake gasket" and I'm not the only one having this problem with this gasket (Fel-Pro) and it not only Fords. Someone mentioned that the printoseal gasket is a racing gasket the is meant to be changed often, not sure on that but something is happening there.
I keep trying to get my wife to go along with she did something to it out on Woodward but she's not buying it. :no
Taking 1 tsp of Gas-ga-cinch will clear more than an elevator and I do have a can if anyone (cmayna) would like to try. :no :no :no
