Steering Wheel Conundrum

I'm at a crossroads on pulling the trigger on a steering wheel and I don't know which way to turn :barf1 . I love the look of a restored rimblow steering wheel in the 69/70 cars, but the price for a restored one is pretty ridiculous. I had tried my hand one time at restoring the standard wheel on a 66 coupe I had and it came out only so-so, so restoring a much more complex rimblow is definitely not an option. When I picked up my 70, it didn't have a steering wheel with it. I picked up a beat up standard wheel from someone on the forum a few years back that I have been using during the restoration. I'm now at the point where it is time to make a decision on the steering wheel. Here's the conundrum...

As much as it pains me to admit it, I definitely went into the 70 because of the 428 SCJ that the owner had transplanted into the car. The motor is non-original to the car, but I got such a smoking deal that I just couldn't pass it up. With that said, I just have not been very into this car. Since the FE was a transplant (and a poorly done one at that), it has been a huge headache (and wallet-ache) trying to sort out and source the correct parts for the setup. I'm to the point where I'm tempted to just get the thing "finished" (if there ever is such a thing), and continue my search for a 67/68 fastback or convertible like I had originally intended for my next car build. With that in mind, I'm having a hard time justifying dropping $700-800 (keep in mind I don't have a core wheel to send in for resto, so I would need to buy one to begin with) on a rimblow steering wheel. I also understand though that a restored rimblow on my car is really only adding value for the next owner. I could go with a Grant style wood wheel, but I've never had good luck with their horn button kits actually working or staying in place and I've never liked the feel of them in my hands as I'm driving. Even so, a nice Grant wheel and kit is going to still set me back $150-200.

So, do you guys think there is more value in dropping the money for a restored rimblow, or in just getting a wheel like the Grant on the car? I know it's all about personal preference, but in this case I really don't know if I will be keeping the car for longer than 6 months or so after it is finished. Do you guys think the money I would put into buying a restored rimblow would come back to me on the sales end?

Ok... I'll get off my :soapboxrant

I say save your money and just get a grant or something. If you're not keeping the car I don't see the rimblow getting you more money out of the car. That's just my opinion.

I tend to agree with your thought that it probably doesn't get me more money out of the car.

And feel free to flame away guys, I promise I won't get all butt hurt over your opinions on the matter... :homo

I'd put a LeCarra in. Having both wood & leather, I prefer the driving feel of the leather.

I've always equated Grant with garbage. YMMV. :part

I had contacted Mark about getting in on one of the group buy LeCarra's (which reminds me, I need to give him a call). I saw a few pictures of the LeCarra on a 69/70 though and it just doesn't look right to me. Which pulls me right back into the conundrum I'm having. Plus I would want to take it off and keep it for my next 67/68 project where I think it looks amazing.

I agree. The 69/70 is a bit different when it comes to steering wheels. I'm trying to decide what I want on my 70 too.

Moto-lita ??

or that italian brand .....forgot the name...

I had not thought of Moto-Lita. I'll have to check out what they have.

And are you talking about Nardi?

YES !! thats what I meant.

Have one laying around here somewhere.

I have a Moto-Lita for my fastback ready to be mounted .

Do you have the deluxe woodgrain interior?

I attached a picture of my current dash setup. Sorry for the crappy camera phone quality.

Here's a pic of the original 70 Mach 1 interior with stock rimblow wheel (so yes, it does have a slight inward dish to it B67FSTB)...

Do you guys think a decent unrestored rimblow in the car would detract from the value? A decent used one would probably set me back about as much as a new Moto-Lita or LeCarra with mounting kit and horn button would.

I bought a nice Nardi wood wheel at a swap meet for $100. Looks as good as anything. There's a lot of similar used wheels out there. If you get one that's nice, I don't think it will detract from the value of the car at all.

In that case....

I would go for a decent used one

My 2 eurocent opinion

Buy a good quality vise grip and use that to steer the car. Cheaper than all other options mentioned so far...

Rimblows are the only thing that looks right in the 69-70s IMO.

You joke...yet that's exactly what we used to steer the car before I got the beat up standard wheel!
