Saturday project (8" rear axle)

One of my friends asked if I would clean up the axle for his Stang. It's an 8 inch. I took it apart and pressure washed it, then had it sand blasted. I sanded it down and then painted it. Still gotta scrape all the crud off the diff and put it back together.

That looks familiar. I sandblasted my intact rear axle (brakes, wheels, and pumpkin installed, though), and found some pitting on the axle housing. I then applied filler compound and hand-sanded that sucker for what seemed like days to get it as smooth as yours.

Fortunately, the outside of my pumpkin was relatively clean!

Looks nice. What did you paint it with?

I'm going to pull and restore my rear axle after Christmas. I'm installing a True-Trac differential and 3.25 gears. Wish I had the means to blast mine as it would sure be much faster than the wire wheel approach.

I should have pressure washed the diff while it was together, this crud is 1/4" thick!

Anybody know the correct red for the diff?

The red color used on the center section is red oxide primer. Most better auto stores will carry it in a rattle can.

time to throw a Powertrax in there before you bolt it back up. And maybe some gears.

I tried to talk him into some gears but he is not building a hot rod. He wants a driver with good mileage. Maybe after he drives it I can get him to reconsider.

With the 5 spd, and gears I still get 23 on the highway in my 65.

it's gonna have 5.0L with an AOD. he could handle some gears.

At least 3:25s. A limited slip is priceless! I regret not doing it in the 67. Now I am in the middle of the 65 and can't afford to do both cars at once. all funds to one and then to the other.

I am planning of doing it too to the rear axle of my fastback and i am considering of putting a limited slip into it.Does anyone know where i can buy a limited slip at a reasonable price.Its heavy and shipping cost to Belgium could be expensive.

Belgium, you may want to buy the parts to modify yours and do the assembly yourself rather than buying the complete pumpkin.

I'd be happy to, it cost me $40 to get it sand blasted but they did a good job. I have some clear engine paint, I hadn't thought about clear coating it. Maybe I should.

you could also use a satin clear if you want the stock flat black look or whatever effect your going for. i want to paint the name of the car on the bottom of the pumpkin...kinda like old school hot rods did..and then clear over it.

well he didn't want to spend $$$ on gears, he also didn't want the diff to be red oxide so I painted it black. He has ordered a disc brake kit for it.
