Hell Bent for Speed
Almost had an accident yesterday with the '70. I drove it to work since it was going to be a beautiful day. And on the way home I noticed that my passenger side sport mirror seemed to be shaking a lot. And I mean a LOT. So I pulled over real fast to inspect it and as I grabbed the sport mirror to feel how loose it was, it came off in my hands.
The damn rubber well nuts pulled through the drilled holes in the door. My car shakes pretty hard due to the rough idle, etc. I am assuming this caused some part of the rubber pulling though.
It looks like the rubber was actually tearing as well:
I need to fix this pretty quickly for the upcoming carshow this weekend, so I went to my local Ace Hardware and they had metal insert nuts this time. I bought these:
They had to be installed with my Rivnut gun. But these hold very very tight. These are similiar to the original style riv nuts. They used a 10-24 stainless screw as well. I am happy with the outcome.
I drove the car in again today and that mirror is solid. No vibration, etc. Very easy to see out of now.
So there ya have it. Avoid the rubber well nuts.
Sorry Dale :hide
