Removing trunk springs?

I started the final teardown of the rustang yesterday. I'm trying to pull everything off that is still in good condition (that isn't much). I got stuck on the trunk hinges and springs though. I wasn't sure if there is a specific way of pulling them out? It looked like the bars should pop out of the notches in the back of the hinge then I can un-bolt them. is that about it? The bars didn't seem to want to budge but I didn't really push too hard because I was unsure of how much pent up energy they had in them. Is there some trick to this?

Um, yes, there is a LOT of stored energy in the tension rods. Do not underestimate their force when releasing them from their attach points. To absorb some of the energy and possibly prevent damage in case things go horribly wrong during removal, lay a bath towel over the rod. This same trick is used on winch cables during vehicle extraction...if the cable breaks, the towel limits the distance the cable will travel.

If you own an electric grinder that uses 4.5 (or larger) grinding discs... I use the "wrench" that tightens the disc's onto the grinder as a tension rod removal tool. Adjacent to the hinge, the open end of the tool can be placed onto the long horizontal section of the rod... and one of the two nipples on the side of the tool can be used to catch and pry the side of the rod (where it attaches to the hinge) to act as a prybar to release the rod from the hinge. Be VERY careful and good luck.

I had I feeling I wanted to be careful with these. Thanks for the info guys. That's a great tip to use the angle grinder tool, Dave.
