yes, compression test will find any loss of pressure in the cylinder including bent or burnt valves.
 
Well the motor's back together and should go back in today. I don't have specifics on what went wrong, but they did tell me that though it had been "repainted", it had never been "rebuilt"...

Why am I not surprised...

Well today the car made as far as the muffler shop before starting to miss (12 miles). Turns out it broke a rocker arm stud/bolt; WTF? Is this car cursed????
