Question for a gas (gauge) expert cmayna

I ordered and received a new fuel sending unit for Dad's convertible. What I am wondering since you have that really cool mockup to calibrate the sending unit if you ever made any measurements. The measurement that I am looking for is the distance from the center of the sending unit to the fluid (gas) level at 4 gallons. I realize that the sending unit is not parallel to the ground and I will need to figure out that angle. The other thing that I can measure on my own is the depth that the float sits in the fluid. Another way to figure out the level of 4 gallons would be the distance from the sending unit (center) to the rear edge of the fluid in the tank. With that type of measurement I could put my trigonometry skills to use.
I know that you are a busy dude and probably do not have time with all of the fish that you are grilling and freezing, but in never hurts to ask.

So sorry for the late reply. Been swamped at the bicycle shop today and yes smoking so much fish.

Revised answer:

When you say center of the sending unit, where specifically are you referring to? Then are you asking for a horizontal measurement from this point to the center of the float at 1/4 tank position? Maybe I should send you my sending unit fixture? If so, and if your're not in a big hurry I would like some time to tweak my method of testing before I sent it to you. Do you have a drain plug on the tank?

Craig,
Excuses are not needed for actually having a real life outside of this forum.
When you say center of the sending unit, where specifically are you referring to?
I was only saying the center as a reference, it could be any point. The sending unit is not parallel to the ground so the pickup tube side is going to be deeper than the side with the wire for the rheostat.

Then are you asking for a horizontal measurement from this point to the center of the float at 1/4 tank position?

The float is not a measurement I need.

OK I have been working and thinking about this post for the last hour. Really trying to keep it simple.
I will assume that test tank fixture is the same as if it were in a Mustang. With 4 gallons of fluid in the fixture take a Wooden Shish Kabob Skewer holding it perpendicular to the ground insert into the fixture above the sending unit. Touch the sending unit with the skewer and remove it. What is the measurement of the wet area and where did you touch the sending unit?

You do not have to use a Shish Kabob Skewer, just thought it might be something that you have on hand. I am not in a BIG hurry, but when I get this done I can start driving the vert again. And I do have a drain plug.

If you want to know the vertical location of the sending unit's float above the floor of the tank at both 4 gal and 8 gal, I can provide that.

Cool. I did not have any time this weekend to play with any of my cars. We are getting the rental house painted this week, so my weekend in addition to the yard work and mowing included getting the outside ready for the painters. I still have to hang a new door to the garage. Just did not have time today and I did not have all of my tools available this weekend.

Not sure what you can do with this info but with 4 gallons, the bottom of the float reside about 1-3/16" above the bottom of the tank. Not sure if this is important but keep in mind that the float is partially submerged as you can see with the water mark in this pic.
