POS Repro parts !!!

So far I'm not too tickled with the quality of the front end trim and grill pieces on Shag. Yesterday I was going to install this center grill cover and find that the posts are 3/8" too far from each other according to the holes in the grill panels (and who the hell knows if those holes were correct).

Nevertheless instead of using the supplied push on nuts, I wanted to see if I could start one of those self threading nuts thingy. And with very little if any effort one snaps off. Maybe this was a blessing for I would have been forced to drill another hole in the panels to match the post dimension.

CRAP, CRAP, CRAP :po

That's all this stuff is :po

Funny thing, my Ferrari neighbors told me earlier this week "The good thing for you Mustangers is that you have access to Reproduction parts. The bad thing is...they are reproduction parts"

There.....I feel better now. :coo

Hey, Craig,

Since you wasted that part, why not try some of that new fangled propane rod that they sell at the car shows that is supposed to be able to melt into everything from aluminum to pot metal. I think it has become so popular that you can pick it up at Home Depot or Ace. That way you can relocate those pins.

I bought some of those rods at a car show here in Tucson and the guy was demonstrating by poking holes in an aluminum can and then using the rod to completely seal the hole. The rod is also stronger than aluminum/pot metal, and applied with a simple propane torch! The demo sold me, but I've yet to use it.

BTW, did you find an adapter for your new steering wheel?

Well, now you know why they supplied push on nuts. :craz Good news is, you can now share your experience and save the next person from making the same mistake.

Craig, mine were off by about 3/8" too. However, the little indent they made in the grill trim for those posts to go through weren't even needed as mine had a gap between them wide enough for me to shove the post through anyhow. Probably not the best way to do it, but it worked. Let me know if you want a pic from the bottom to show how its attached.

Overall fitment of that piece sucked regardless, it didn't match the shiny part of the trim on the forward or rear side of it.

I had the same problem, but I ended up breaking off both posts when futzing around with it.

Since my cover is painted with body color paint, I didn't want to buy another piece and have it painted. So I just took a piece of peel and stick sound deadener; removed the sticky material from the foil; and used the the sticky stuff to adhere the cover into place. It's held great, and it insulates it from rattling, too!

Yesterday while at JeffTeppers place I saw he had one of these grill center pieces from Scott Drake. I measured it and it was dead on. So I guess I had some bad luck receiving some junk. Oh well......

Craig, where did you get yours from? I got mine directly from Dynacorn, and it was a Corvex brand part. Scott Drake also resells Corvex stuff, not necessarily this same part. Its often difficult, even ordering from Scott Drake, to know what part you will get. I had this same problem with fender aprons one time. The Dynacorn apron was spot on, but there was a period of time where they were backordered and they temporarily sourced aprons from another manufacturer. It was one of those deals where the part came in with a Brand X sticker on it and a Dynacorn sticker overtop the Brand X sticker. So even if you said I want the Dynacorn part because I know its good, and you order directly from Dynacorn, there's no guarantee you get the part you want. Its extremely frustrating.

I only use OEM joint covers when I need them. Saves a lot of time and grief. They usually come up on ebay, anywhere from $25-50 each.

Wow, I can buy 3 POS repro pieces for the same price as a NOS piece.

And apparently you'll end up with 3 repro parts in the trash and still have a gap in your trim!

Now if that was a NOS out grill trim, I would be all over that. As it is, I have aquired a small stock pile of good originals that I am saving in the attic.
