Pics Rebuilt Motor and Questions

DEL65

Of The Morons
Hi, the rebuild on my motor is almost done. Shelby manifold, Comp Cams 268/280 & 224/230 @ .050, AFR 165's, 10.0 compression, roller rockers...etc. Here are a few pics.

Question: The free distributor I was planning to use won't fit. The housing is hitting the runner for #5. So now I'm looking for a replacement. I prefer a mechanical advance, because I dislike the look of that vacuum advance thingy. Brand does not matter not does the use of an external MSD box. Can I ask for a few suggestions? Thanks.

Also, I 'm interested in tall Cobra valve covers I saw on Branda's site. Anyone else carry them? Thanks.

Looks good. What kind of distributor is that? I used the MSD Pro-Billet small diameter dizzy on my old engine and it fit fine with the Stealth intake and could even be removed with a straight monte carlo bar in place. The mechanical advance worked OK but would sometimes stick a little so I eventually went with a timing computer to control advance.

I think Branda is the only place you can get those covers. I had the same covers and recommend using allen head screws to bolt 'em down since the covers don't have enough clearance for a socket. . .

Trim those gaskets!

I have those tall aluminium cobra valve covers.Just a pitty that a small bracket is attached to the top.
This small bracket is there to hold the spark plug wires holder.I have deleted them on mine.
Like 66BENCHCOUPE said , use allen head screws to bolt them.

That was the only source I found. If you do go with them, be sure to test fit them for clearance. I had to use a thicker gasket to get clearance on the right front cover (if I remember correctly). Also, the covers will oxidize and flake. I used Eastwood Alumablast and cleared over that.

Hi Bill, I'll contact you about the Unilite.

Hi Robert, the dist. in the photo is an older model Accell. My mechanic gave it to me to pair with an MSD box. Thanks for the warning about the sticky mech. advance, allen heads, and advice on the valve covers/clear coat.

I appreciate it.

Just an FYI on the valve cover gaskets for the AFR-165s... I tried the steel core neoprene valve cover gaskets and had leaks. I finally switched over to the AFR reccomended Felpro 1645 gaskets and the seem to be be working well (double laminated cork with steel core). They seem to fit the heads a lot better than the steel core neoprene gaskets. Normal cork gaskets might work fine too, just be wary of the neoprene ones that have a very narrow sealing bead.

I've been looking at the Summit brand lately, although I'm looking at the vacuum one, they have a mech. Good prices and their boxes are copies of Cranes it appears so I wouldn't be surprised if their dist. are also:

Haven't used them yet but everyone who has used their new line of carbs has been pleasantly surprised from what I've read.

I'm running those covers and a unilite on my car. No problems with the dizzy. I'm going to swap it out for an MSD in the near future.

I agree with previous comments on the valve cover bolts.
