Oil Leak ?

When I was under the Mustang a couple days ago working on the tie rod, I noticed that the oil pan was oil covered. Does this appear to be the front seal? If so, how do you change that? That is something I have never done.

Front seal looks like the prime candidate. You'll need to drop the pan for replacement.

Since I used a 1 piece oil pan gasket, I guess I need a new one. Is the front seal part of the oil pan gasket?

That very well may be the front main seal. It is not part of the pan gasket,,,,it is a separate seal that goes around the crankshaft.

Clean the area real good and drive a short distance. Then check if the oil originates from the pan gasket or higher, at the crank. Fast driving can blow oil many places so do an easy test drive.

I'd try to snug the pan bolts first. Also check the PVC system for a clogged valve and make sure it's working. Just a couple of easy fixes that "may" work.

I thought this was made to leak to keep the bottom of the car oily to prevent rust?

Get a black light & some leak detection dye for oil, after using this you will not investigate a leak without it. Add the prescribed amount to the oil drive & get your black light out to see where it originates.

If the front seal is the issue it is not difficult at all. This is assuming the seal is installed from the outside, some years they were installed from the inside. pull the balancer, pop the seal out, install new & put the balancer back on.
