No heat

I am have issues getting my heater to work. New thermostat installed (180 degree) heater core has flows free but still little heat. Temp gauge runs just inside the normal operating zone but on the cold side of normal. What is the correct temp thermostat and how do I get more heat? I have the factory 6 cylinder engine, the 200 CID.

I believe 180 is the correct thermostat for you application. Couple questions, Is your thermostat a new install? Did you do a stove top test before install? Is the heater box a newly rebuild/install? Heater core new? What's the story on the water pump?

No test of thermostat, new installed two weeks ago. Water pump was new two years ago. Heater box was rebuilt but core is old. I did not have it cleaned but water flows through it very well so I am confused.

No mention has been made about your heater hoses (from the engine to the heater core) Is there a restrictor in one of the hoses or are they plugged up with gunk?

Is there any heat at all? A heater core can flow pretty decent and still be partially plugged.

A friend had this issue on his mustang after a new Tstat and refill, turned out he still had a lot of air in the system so the heater didn't put out much. He burped it numerous times until the system was full on fluid.

Yes, I should have thought about mentioning burping the system after the stat was replaced. Good point.

With the car cold, take off the radiator cap, make sure the radiator is filled to within about an inch to the top. Start the engine with the radiator cap off and wait for the thermostat to open, when it does the level in the radiator should drop some if there is an air pocket, if it drops, top off the radiator and put the cap back on BEFORE YOU SHUT OFF THE ENGINE... don't ask me how I learned that lesson... that is the technique I use everytime I start a fresh motor with no anti-freeze...

Great suggestions, thanks. Did what dm289 recommended, still no heat. Level was about 1.5 inches below top of tank, started car waited until t-stat opened, water in top of tank when from cold to hot. Filled tank and replaced cap, still little heat. I guess my core is plugged up, guess I need to have it cleaned out. Thanks to all for the help.
