Need fuel sender sealing help?

I received the new fuel sender (scott drake) and it has the same tiny rubber gasket and I just cannot get it to seal. There are some tiny tabs on the very inside of the sender, how do they hold the gasket in place? Should I bend them down to hold onto the gasket or leave them straight out to hold it? I am about ready to chunk that dang thing and just put some gas safe sealant on there. Thanks, Gary

Apply Vaseline to the gasket to help hold it in place, then cinch up on the retaining ring.

Thank you sir, I had not thought of something that simple. How about the two little tabs on the inside? Just leave them pointing outward?

Don't know about the tabs...it's been 6 years since I replaced mine.

The two tabs on the inside of the sending unit flange will align with the two notches in the fuel tank's opening. I normally use Blue Hylomar sealant for sealing the rubber gasket to the tank's groove.

I did a search at autozone/advanced auto/oreillys/napa and none of these had this sealant in a search. Where did you pick that up at?

If you're doing the gasket while the tank is still installed, it can be a PIA. Here's a photo of the Permatex gasket sealer I used and, if you can get your hands on one, the tool for the retaining ring.

You can get this sealer anywhere and it will help hold the gasket in place. Put a little of the goop in the tank's gasket groove and smear some more on the gasket. It will hold it in place.

Just checked the markings on my Hylomar and it is called Hylomar HPF gasket dressing and flange sealant. Item 25249

I picked some up this morning. I put the sender in using this and the gasket. It was only leaking at the top this time. It is bent right up there. I give up on this tank, I'll just get another tank and install. After three times of leaking gas, it's time to throw in a match...er I mean the towel. :sarc

I seem to remember a long time ago, that we could use a larger tank in the '66 stangs. Like a 20 gal. maybe? Would I have to modify anything to do this? Thanks, gary

No there would be no modifications. The difference of the tank is from the flange upward. The only other thing is that you would need is a 69 sending unit for a 20 gallon tank. It has a slightly longer arm.

You do have to modify the filler neck. The larger tank sits higher above the floor. I tried both a 65 and a 69 filler neck, finally cutting and re-welding one of them to make the larger tank work.
