Member Location google map?

Are we supposed to be able to drop a pin on the map? I poked around, but couldn't find a way to do it.

Its geolocation looks at your internet connection / IP to guess your city or country.
It doesn't seem to be working for me. There's no pin near my location. Does the use of a VPN mess with it's mojo?

Is there a provision to opt-in? (Or opt-out, for that matter?)

I dont' see mine on there either and I've been a SF member since '09. I don't think IP addresses are very accurate.

@67DropTop can you give some advice on how you created the one with the ability to drop pins on your own? That way if people don't want to be too specific (house) they can pick a nearby city, walmart, school, etc. to be as accurate/ inaccurate as they wish for privacy.

Can anyone move your pin after or only the admin of the map?

I would bet that yes, use of VPN will show you as coming from the IP of VPN.
And being IP based, I wouldn't worry about privacy and exposing home address. If I am reading the map correctly, it has me coming from about two towns south - where my IP usually shows. When I go to a site (Home Despot, Lowes, Harboring Freight, etc( that uses your IP to set your store, they are always wrong.

I had it linked earlier. It looks like Emelio is looking for a better solution so I deleted it.

Anyone with the link and google ID can go in and absolutely wreck the map. Locking it down would mean the "admin" would have to do ALL of the maintenance, including adding pins. It hasn't been a problem.

Yes. They would need to uncheck their "Show your online status" in the Account preferences page and wait until the first of the month when the Members map cron entry runs.

Also, By design members location is only accurate to about 10 to 15 miles.

Also set for Members active within the past 365 days.
