My wife's newly aquirred fillet knife sheath is way too white, kinda like me (so I've been told) :shrug

What is a good leather conditioner to darken it to make it look a little more Davy Crockett used like?

Always used Neatsfoot oil on baseball gloves.

be careful using neatsfoot oil & mink oil if there is any cotton stitching as it will cause the thread to break down over time. i've antiqued numerous leather pieces fooling with the antique flight jackets over the years. i used to make the leather name tags that were originally made for the jackets during the war & had many requests to make them look 60 yrs old. heres what you need to do:

get a bottle of leather dye in a color that you like ( a paste type will work better than liquid).

wet the leather & with a sponge or balled up paper towel, dab some of the dye on & rub it in , kinda like you wax the car.

buff with a clean dry cloth until it has a sheen & the excess dye is removed.

next step requires a piece of fine grit sandpaper, prefereably around 1000-2000 grit colorsanding paper. use the sandpaper to sand the color off the edges etc. & create some "time wear" places on the facings.

after you get it looking distressed the way you want it, a good leather conditioner will seal it up. i use the antique leather conditioner from these folks, best i've found anywhere:

if you really want it to look old, start out with a red mahogany color, then add a few accent spots with a walnut to create a dirty look. if all else fails, send it to me!

I use Mermanc Mink Oil on my boots, and pretty much anything else leather around the house. Works fantastic. That said, I don't have to worry about cotton stitching breaking down on my boots as I wear them out every year or so.
