Is everyone ready for Christmas??

Remember how exciting it used to be to get close to Christmas day when we were kids, I remember we used to get to open one gift on Christmas eve-(that was after we got back home from our rotating celebration at a aunt and uncles home--dinner followed by gifts for all kids)--My mom was a depression raised child so she was pretty practical--yes we got underwear (from J.C.penney) and socks and shirts/other clothes along with plenty of toys--Holidays are the time of year when I reflect back--I realize now what an a$$hole I could be, like the time I was probably 12 and wanted a electric guitar---they bought me a nice new wooden one and I would not even take lessons or play with it, I wanted a Schwinn "orange crate", I got a like new used really nice Schwinn adults bike, I saw it was used and barely rode it. I now know they bought it because it was a better , more practical bike but me the a$$hole wanted a new cool one. The Grandaughter in now 10 and she thinks she is pretty grown up so Christmas is losing its "fun" more and more each year, I hope all of you "younger" people really take the time and enjoy your kids and your parents both at Christmas time as they are grown up or gone in the blink of an eye! Don't get me wrong, I am not totally depressed but some of the "special" is lessening with time---guess its called getting old!
I sincerely Hope all of you have a Merry Christmas and a blessed and happy new year!!!

I'm trying to keep the youth alive with my kids. My oldest is 11 and I debated telling him the Santa truth but decided he would figure it out sometime on his own. No need to ruin it. Keep the mystery alive a little while longer.
I still make sure we sit down and watch the Christmas specials. I have my favorites too.
It's hard being a single dad doing all this alone but I'm doing my best and hopefully some day they will appreciate it.
This was the first year I only put up 3 stockings. Weird. But I got new ones to make it fresh.

I'm not ready yet. Lights outside going up on Sunday. Trees are set. Wife's family over for Christmas Eve. Celebrate with my Mother and Sister's family on Christmas Day. First time in years they are not all at my house....

I feel ya, Rod. Being a Christmas baby myself (12/26 to be exact) I have always found this time of year to be very special. Since I've had kids I always tried to make the entire month a build up to the big day. Religious aspects aside, it was just a lot of fun to see the excitement build each week.

We'd watch a Christmas movie virtually every night. Christmas music always playing throughout the house. Special outings like going to see a holiday play, or a train ride with Santa, going to downtown Chicago to see the window display at Marshall Fields, etc.

For as long as I can remember we would host Christmas Eve dinner at our place and have all the siblings and nieces and nephews over. There would be over a dozen kids of various age running about. After dinner, before they each got to open the single present they were allowed to open that night, the kids were made to perform for the adults. They had to sing various Christmas songs in groups with the finale being the lot of them singing The 12 Days of Christmas, parading in and out of the room with each verse. Holding up small posters the had made to show off each gift (golden ring, two turtle doves, etc.)

And finally, before leaving for home, I take digital pics of each family in front of our big tree, print them out and put them in picture frames the kids had decorated earlier in the evening. We always had the kids do some kind of "crafty" project together. It's pretty special seeing all those kids from ages of like 3 to 20 huddled around the big island in the kitchen feverishly working to create something special.

Most of the "kids" are now in their very late teens or even 20's today. It's pretty funny to hear them (if they show up now) tell the horror stories of having to sing for their presents...right before they ask if they "have" to sing again this year. All the while hoping we tell them yes.

As this Christmas approaches, I am down to just one boy at home. My nine year old. My oldest boy is in San Diego in Marine boot camp. My daughter has long ago moved out but will visit with the grandson at some point. It's been really hard this year to get "in the mood". I feel bad as my little guy will miss out on much of the traditional celebrations we used to have as the family has drifted apart as they aged.

I'm ready for Christmas to be over. 20 years in retail really sours the holiday for you. As a kid I loved Christmas. Once I really saw the commercialized side of Christmas it's really hard to see it the same again. Nothing but crabby people complaining. And then after returning all gifts.

The only reason we tell our 3 year old daughter about Santa is so she is not the kid that tells everyone else's kids he's not real. She generally gets about 3 presents from Santa. The rest come from the Grandmas.

Our traditions have turned to various charities. Every year we take Alaina shopping and she helps pick out toys for tots. She understand already that Christmas is not all about the presents u get. She loves to give the presents to other kids as she knows she has a lot and is very fortunate.

My family is very spread out and no one gets together for Christmas. I don't put up lights. No parties etc. Our tree comes up for 1 month from the basement, gets plugged in and then returns to the basement before new years.

So I guess I am a Scrooge, a Grinch, and a terrible father. But I do still wish everyone a merry Christmas. I don't hate Christmas, just the commercial aspect of it. From a religious standpoint we celebrate what Christmas is really about to us.

You need to host a Christmas party and get back into the fun of it. He's the reason for the season and for the fun!

Nuttin' says I Love You like a .38 with a laser sight. Damn nice gift. :thum I'd got the same thing if I thought she wouldn't use it on me.

After 5 years of telling her we couldn't afford diamond earring she called bullcrap on me this year. Mainly because she knows how much I spent on my mustang and what I've put in it since September. So they're pretty nice earrings.
