Headlights

I meant to look last night in the shop manual but forgot, does anyone have good instructions on aiming the headlights? Mine seem plenty bright, but not aimed right. When I aimed them I had the car about 20 feet from the garage wall. Not sure if I was to close or to far to get them aimed right. Any ideas?

I generally go about 15-20 ft. Are they to high, low, what? The other trick is to pull the car out in the driveway at night or if you're in a neighborhood, on the road. Adjust to likeness.

There are excellent instructions both in the Ford Shop Manual and the Osborne Electrical Assembly Manuals.

I generally make sure they point towards the front......

I like to use an average car in a parking lot. I aim the dim lights so they are just below the rear window of that car. The right light I point straight forward and the left gets a slight tip to the right as not to blind the oncoming traffic.

Of course, you do know how to access the adjustment screws and use a screwdriver...correct?

Theres actually a tool to do it properly. My buddy owns one and i was skeptical at first, but the work great. You suction it on the lens, and set it to level to get you close, (Thats why the lens have those little nipple things, to align the tool) Then you use the mirrors on the tool to set the lights even with eachother. It really slick, and way better then aiming at a wall.

Good gawd, you'd have to be :gobp to spend that kinda coin on a tool you'll use twice in your life! Take a few measurements at the headlights, transfer them to a wall, aim lights....it ain't rocket surgery folks.

It gets used a ton, He and his family own, 54 vette, 57 belair, 69 buick GS, 69 Buick Convertible, I think its a 55 Fairlane, and a few others. Plus they are constantly doing chit. I used his 4 post lift when i put my motor in.

Actually, I was referring to Slow68back being :gobp

IIRC, my owner's manual actually has instructions in it.

Many shops, especially body shops, have at least one type of headlight aiming tool. There are now optical tools that don't require being suctioned onto the headlight.

That said, I just aim mine where I think they need to go. Reminds me, my left headlight needs to come up a bit...
