Yes, this is sort of a Ginger vs. Mary-Ann question.
I get an Xmas card from my in-laws every year from HD, but I prefer Lowes. Why? Today was a good example. I arrive at HD at 7:45AM to pick up 10 bags of decorative lava rocks. I park near their nursery entrance, so I don't have to schlep so far with 100+ pounds of rocks. The nursery entrance is locked, but the store is open. I go into the front door, go to the nursery section, find the rocks, and then look for a heavy-duty cart. Shoot! They are all outside the nursery locked door! Well, almost, I found one underneath some plants. I load up the cart, and head back into the store, all the way to the other side where the checkout lines are. There's one line open, and six people are waiting in line. The self-check out lines are all closed. A few minutes later, one of the waiting folks in line snags an attendant to complain about the lack of open lines. "I'm sorry, Sir, I have to open the nursery". After 10 minutes of waiting, I finally get to the checkout line, and produce my gift card. As expected, it isn't enough so I pull out the checkbook. I have to sign electronically and acknowledge that there will be a $25 fee for a returned check. You gotta be kidding! HD has such great customer service.
Lowes is across the street. They open an hour earlier, and if you stand in a product aisle for more than 2 minutes, someone comes and asks you if you need help. There's at least two if not three checkers on station at all times. They ask if you need help taking your crap out to your car. They never question my checks.
Is this the same across the country or in your area? I can't understand how HD stays in business...
