HD vs. Lowes

Yes, this is sort of a Ginger vs. Mary-Ann question.

I get an Xmas card from my in-laws every year from HD, but I prefer Lowes. Why? Today was a good example. I arrive at HD at 7:45AM to pick up 10 bags of decorative lava rocks. I park near their nursery entrance, so I don't have to schlep so far with 100+ pounds of rocks. The nursery entrance is locked, but the store is open. I go into the front door, go to the nursery section, find the rocks, and then look for a heavy-duty cart. Shoot! They are all outside the nursery locked door! Well, almost, I found one underneath some plants. I load up the cart, and head back into the store, all the way to the other side where the checkout lines are. There's one line open, and six people are waiting in line. The self-check out lines are all closed. A few minutes later, one of the waiting folks in line snags an attendant to complain about the lack of open lines. "I'm sorry, Sir, I have to open the nursery". After 10 minutes of waiting, I finally get to the checkout line, and produce my gift card. As expected, it isn't enough so I pull out the checkbook. I have to sign electronically and acknowledge that there will be a $25 fee for a returned check. You gotta be kidding! HD has such great customer service.

Lowes is across the street. They open an hour earlier, and if you stand in a product aisle for more than 2 minutes, someone comes and asks you if you need help. There's at least two if not three checkers on station at all times. They ask if you need help taking your crap out to your car. They never question my checks.

Is this the same across the country or in your area? I can't understand how HD stays in business...
 
Lowes has better customer service but HD usually has a better selection and better quality products. Depends on what you are looking for I guess.
 
Doyou want to shop at the husband's company or the wife's?

Same thing in my area....HD is terrible....lol.... You should have gone to Lowe's with the gift card...they may have accepted it.
 
They have been burned to many times on checks. What people do is buy something with money in the account and then immediately go and take out the money out of the bank. Checks usually get cashed after 3 days.

That's why they prefer electronic payments or cash. Checks are the easiest way to fake. I don't take them unless the check address matches the DL or if it's a low check number. That usually means they just opened the account. Also I look in the shopping cart to see if they are buying expensive stuff. That's where we lose the most money is through check bouncing.

Have to agree. Working in retail I see a lot of bad checks. Big red flag is when people come up with unusually large purchases then write a check. Midst times it get declined, but we get a good amount of bounced checks.

I am hoping we stop taking checks soon.
 
Only have a Lowe's in Ames, so.........Although, I just recently went shopping for new toolboxes and ended up ordering them from H-D online. Delivery was fast and they were by far the least expensive out there for what you get. So far, they are living up to expectations!

The total doesn't change anything. They have a policy on checks and whether it's $10 or $200, they do the same thing. Why would you take it as a personal attack that they have a check policy?

If the guy giving you the check doesn't look like he will make it to the bank to deposit his SS check (he's too old to believe in direct deposit), don't take the check. Simply ask for cash, point to the sky an say oh look, Amelia
 
Walmart and our HD have a system that takes the money from your account just as fast as your debit card. The cashier runs the check through the register and it prints void on the front and something on the back and they have the money. You don't even have to fill it out. The cashier then hands the check back with your receipt.

Debit card or check is all the same.

geeze Mid, who writes checks anymore...
I had to use one for a passport application recently and could barely remember how to fill it out correctly...
 
I never shop at HD . they are over priced. I usually shop at Menard's here, but Lowe's sometimes has something I need.

I'm a Lowe's fan...
However, on a recent fence project, HD was quite a bit cheaper on cedar pickets, so I bought 300 there. Later, I found an online coupon for $50 off $250 at Lowes, and bought 300 more pickets there for about .02 per picket less.

The Home Depot pickets are MUCH nicer. Lowes pickets look like crap - in fact I returned/exchanged about 10% of them as they were so bad I refused to use them - splits, stains, huge thickness variations, etc.

BTW, if anyone wants a deal at Lowes, here's the codes - you DO have to order online, then pick up in store. The codes did NOT work at the register....
