Extending heater core tubes

fbproject

I remember reading about extending the tubes of the heater core on 65-66 mustangs to put the hose connections in the engine compartment. I'm trying to rebuild my 65 heater case while the car is out for paint. So, how much extension is needed? Any pit falls I'm overlooking? Any one have a bookmarked write up on this? Paint or clear on the case itself? Thanks

Not a bad idea , but remember to support the extended tubes at the firewall as they bent easier that way and also you have more stress at the core.
About 3 inches?

I just unsolder the 2 tubes at the core, and extend them about 2 1/2" - 3". That puts them cleanly into the engine compartment, and makes hose changes a snap, or any leaks into the engine compartment (have not had a leak, but if I did....). It is about a 15 minute job, and the core is completely supported by the heater box. Bob
