Ever used a bad shoe video to rebuild a tranny?

Well, I thought I had my transmission problems solved when I changed my starter. Now I have another problem all together... that's why I haven't posted a video of the EFI running yet. I'm running the factory C4 now which has never been gone through. I do have the AOD rebuild bad shoe video that Ive had for a few years... I do have a 88 AOD out of my FOX mustang that is missing overdrive.... If i could rebuild this tranny with the video, then I would much rather install the over drive tranny, since I have 4.11 gears in the back. I have never rebuilt a transmission. I have done a few engines. I am pretty mechanical (hvac technician), and I have an open mind and an empty wallet. Has anyone successfully rebuilt a transmission with the bad shoe video? Should I just pay Some one to do it, or can I save myself some money and accomplish this myself?

Never seen or heard of the video.

Judging from your statement, I would think you could tackle it. They really are not that mysterious.
Never done a Ford trans. I've done many Toyotas though.

It's a hella messy job.
Having a regulated compressed air source would be real handy to check drum and piston operations during re-assembly.

Big things to look out for are sticky valves, check balls where they belong, correct valve body gaskets, clearances, and most of all, clean clean clean assembly area. DO NOT wear latex gloves.

Soak all your fiber discs for at least 12 hours prior to reassembly. Even though you have the video, it would not hurt to have a manual specific to that transmission to aid in re-assembly.
[admin]Oh yeah, I've seen vaseline used as a assembly lube and to help hold tiny parts in place but I would highly recommend using a transmission specific assembly lube. It's less viscous than vaseline and is usually blood red in color.[/admin]

I haven't used their tranny videos, but that's what I used to rebuild the traction-lok 9" in Scary. The Bad Shoe Productions video made it a piece of cake.

I would HIGHLY recommend them!

Why no latex gloves?

Because latex gloves and nice sharp machined surfaces do not play well together and the tiniest piece of latex in an automatic will :fbomb you beyond belief. :craz

I've rebuilt my C4 (twice now) and I used a video I got from Eastwood as one of a few resources to get me up to speed. It gave me the confidence I needed.
If I can do it, anybody can!

I've rebuilt a C4 and had my C6 apart to change a few things. Never did the AOD but I suspect it wouldn't be much different. I say go for it! I have an AOD that's slipping and have thought about rebuilding it and going with the conversion but the bellhouse doesn't fit my 429.

I've never used a video when I rebuilt my old c4. I just picked up the ole haynes ford tranny manual, and just followed the disassembly and assembly step by step with no problems.

The original shop manual, for a 67 anyway, was good enough to get the job done the 2nd time for me. If you can find something similar to that for the AOD, it's a bit handier when you're actually doing it cuz you can flip back and forth to different pictures and such.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I'd have to say, then, that a video is worth a billion words.

If you've never done this before, it can be done by just using the Hayne's manual. There is nothing like actually seeing someone do it, though, to explain all those little things that you just can't get out of a book.

I doubt you will regret buying the video, and my guess is that you'll actually do a better job with it, as a first time build.

I've heard on the VMF that some people have used their video on the 9 inch rebuild and recommended it. That's all I got.

When I first rebuilt a C4, I just took my time and laid the parts out in order, then as they say, assembly is the reverse of dis-assembly. Cleaning and comparing used parts to new is very important. Never throw out your old parts until you get through the break in period, at least a few hundred miles!

Yes, I have the AOD video and have rebuilt 2 of these and both are still working great. He does an excellent job of going thru the tranny and showing you upgrades and different stuff you can do to make it last longer and be much stronger. Well worth the small cost of the video. The only special tools you will need is a set of the seal protectors (about $80-90 on ebay or from an internet source). The other is a coat hanger...lol. He shows you how to make a hook to slide the assembly into the case when putting it back together. Worked great for me. I have the '90 aod behind a 5.0 HO in my '66 and is it great and very strong. :ecit Makes driving a whole lot more fun to me in, traffic especially.
