electric choke connection question

After reading the thread about the Summit carb I decided to buy two for a couple of 289's I have with carb issues. For those of you who have installed this carb, are you all using the stator connector on the alternator for your electrical supply? The reason I ask is I put a voltmeter on the STA stud and didn't get a reading either with or without the ignition on. Does it only provide power when the engine is running? Is there a better alternative? The choke wire is the last thing I need to do before firing this thing up so any input is appreciated.

TMK you won't get anything out of the STA without it running and the alt. spinning making voltage, that's important as you would have juice going to the choke (opening it) with the car off and a drain. I've hooked 2 carbs up this way and they worked perfect, I did adjust the choke cap (turning) to get it set to my area temps. as depending on how cold it gets you want it to open at different rates. I hooked it up and waited ~5-10 min. till the engine was at temp. to see that the choke opened fully before fiddling.
The STA also puts out low voltage which helps with the slow opening vs. getting a full 12V connection which will open the choke faster, possibly too fast before the engine is warmed. The choke is just a wound spring that heats up to pull the flap open.

That's what I kinda figured Jon. It makes sense that it would only provide power with the alt. turning but I wanted to get some responses to reassure myself. Thanks.
