Cool new part - clutch safety switch

Just got this months Mustang Times (July 2011), and was perusing it...

Page 25 has a 65-66 Mustang clutch safety switch. $39.95. Design looks like something you could put together with some generic parts or just buy the kit as-is and install.

I was just thinking about this today starting my car in the garage... checked like 3 times the car was in neutral and even then was still nervous starting the car without my foot on the clutch (was just lazy - been running a lot lately - sore feet).

Seems like a great idea for another mod.

Yeah, but how is it wired to the ignition circuit? My T-5 is only electrically connected to the back-up lights.

Every Mustang has within it's wiring a connector or jumper that is used to interrupt the cranking signal (NSS). It is either a male-female in-line plug (64.5-66) or a 4 pin plug for NSS and backup lights. One simply uses the two pins for the NSS that are jumpered at the factory for manual transmissions by cutting the jumper wire and hooking up a NSS.

Yep.

I just used the two that went to the nss and wired them into a flat two pin connector then put a flat two pin connector on the t-5s neutral switch and BAM! It will only start in neutral.

Cool. I did not realize that's what that other pigtail was for. Damn. More wiring to do.

Don't forget to use wire nuts! :censored

yeah right. I can assure you there are no wire nuts anywhere on any car that I own.

Wait, does the house wiring in the RV count on that statement?

I just finished my A/C install, and I foolishly thought my days of wedging myself under the steering wheel/dash were over. But I guess I will crawl back under. My wiring diagram shows the starter signal wire to be red/blue stripe. (66 Underdash wiring). Does anyone know approximately where the inline disconnect is under the dash? I have a T5 and I guess I might as well hook up the the neutral safety switch already built into my T5. Sounds like the safe thing to do. My wife can stop asking why I jiggle the stick shift around before using the starter to verify neutral. Habits being what they are, I'll still personally check for neutral.

I'm not as familiar with 66 wiring, Midlife will chime in here though, but I'm pretty sure you can tap into that wire near the top driver side of the firewall, engine compartment side, fairly easily. I seem to recall the NSS wiring maybe dropping down through the floor near the shifter on some years, don't recall which though.

I was just under my dash for the past week or so, doing a lot of rewiring of the stuff that I've done to the car. (Plus finding a few wires that I didn't know existed -- thanks Midlife for the info). Part of that process was shortening all the alarm wires, so they don't add to the rat's nest. I found that the disconnect the alarm installer used is near the firewall near the main disconnect on the right side above the gas pedal. Be prepared to stand on your head and contort around to get to it!!!

The red/blue crank signal wire disconnect (NSS) is available on 64.5-66 models just inside the passenger compartment from the right hand firewall (gauge) plug. I've seen two versions: male/female bullet plug and a male/female single in-line quick disconnect "molex"-type connector. Both connector types are still available, but not usually at your local parts store. The bullet connectors one usually finds are not tight fitting in the Ford mates.
