Chrome Dings

Hey guys, what are the tricks to taking dings out of chrome trim. Rock dings, etc. I have tried hammer and dolly on one piece and it does not look that good.

if its stainless, such as window trim, after you do the "dinging" with the hammer, you will have to file it smooth, sand it then repolish. trick is to do the dinging lightly so you dont file thru the bumps in the metal & create a hole. a better method (depending on the shape of the trim) is to make a "buck" out of a piece of wood (a 2x2 or2x4 cutoff will work) that will be a mirror image of the face of the trim. clamp the damaged piece of trim outer face down against the pattern buck & fasten to a drill press table. grind a couple of carriage bolts to the contours of the inner face of the trim & chuck one up in the drill chuck. DO NOT turn the drill on,but use the carriage bolt in the chuck to press out the damage. this gets you pretty colse, but still may need a little light hammer work before filing sanding & polishing.

+1 I restored Shag's front and rear window trim using a modifed drift to some reflect the contour of the trim and a small hammer with a wooden block support. Once hammered out, used a file and then started with a series of different grit wet or dry sanding papers from 250 up to 2000 grit. Polished afterwards with a couple different rouges and a cloth buffing wheel attached to my polisher.

Did the same on the drip rail mouldings and found a post about it.
