Carpet Installation

Installing the carpet in my 67 hopefully this weekend. Any tips or tricks I should be aware of?

Thanks!

Yes,
Take your time in locating the holes which you will be needing to poke for seats, seat belts, etc. I use an old soldering pencil to burn the holes. It also sear the frayed strands of carpet.

Listen well~ the carpet around the shifter? the carpet doesn't go beneath the heavier part of it! it goes beneath the bezel(of course this doesn't apply if you're using a console). Pay attention to that area! Other than that, that furry stuff under the carpet is really tough to cut! Making the holes for the seat belts can be a little testy too! other than that, it's not too bad! sure looks and smells nice after you're done! looks like a new car inside! If it's black carpet, it shows every little spec!

There will be excess at the sill plates you may need to trim. Make sure it's pushed down into the feet area + inner rocker all the way before you trim otherwise it'll be too short. IIRC, I used an ice-pick-like tool to locate the console and shifter holes & punch through.

I used some industrial strength Velcro along sill plate edges and along the rear under the rear seats to help hold it in place while installing.

Use where-ever you see fit. it helps.

Great idea I happen to have some.

I used a hot soldering iron to melt holes and cut it.. It seals the edges to keep it from unraveling.

Sun it, check hole locations 5 times, watch shifter. Basically everything that was said +1. Once you have it "relaxed" let it sit in the car a couple days if possible and allow it to settle in a little before making it permanent.

The hole for the shifter isn't there correct?

Sounds like I'll need to pull the shifter, damn!!

Along with the other tips mentioned. I used gallon ziplocks filled with sand to keep things in place. It really help keep the carpet in place.

I believe you are correct about having to remove the shifter. Sorry.

The shifter hole should be there, no need to remove the shifter, just make some small holes for the boot/retainer plate attachment.

Another word of advice. When trimming the carpet if you put the razor blade down for a minute to use both hands adjusting the carpet make sure when you pick the razor back up to look at it to verify you don't have it in your hand backwards before you start cutting again. If it's backwards you'll slice the crap out of your finger. Said sliced finger will require stitches or super glue. Ask me how I know this :roll

I used a punch to locate the holes.

Yes now that you mention it Tom I think you are correct about a shifter hole being there. Hopefully though that it is in the right place.

Seats are ready I pick them up in the am. Then work on wiring for gear vendors and then carpet. May let it sit for a day or two before I trim.

Once that is all in I put the bump steer kit in and the camber plates and get it aligned so I can drive it.

Pretty soon we'll be driving our Mustangs together over the hill to Duartes in Pescadero for lunch!! Totally awesomeness maximus.
