Car Show Snobbery Rant

Car shows....pick one that works for you and go...leave the rest.

I have spent a lot of time complaining about how car/motorcycle shows were run and have run many myself. There is no making everyone happy for sure.

A lot of the local shows here are just getting stupid. The MOPAR club had one and awarded trophies to the Top 80 selected by the drivers. Had just over 100 cars I believe. No first, no best engine, nothing......just 80 trophies.

Yes, my '11 got one....I am so proud.....lol. I enter the '11 based on the fact that I am a member of the local Mustang club and that is what clubs do....hold events and support other clubs events.

I actually would rather not enter an awarded show but there is usually no option to attend/show your car unless you enter for an award. Even with the older cars I have had, I am well beyond needing a trophy.

As for the new cars.....I can see them at a dealer but it is ice to see what is out there and talk to owners without being hassled by sales and the such. Plus, there are about half a dozen cars like mine around locally, many say they had no idea what the GT/CS was for.

Now, on to other fun things......

One more than I'm done. Could the promoters of some of these shows leave the Elvis impersonators off the show stage? I know more than a few people besides myself( I keep my mouth shut as I don't have a dog in the fight(car)) who have been complaining about this for awhile now. I'm suprised the rat rod guys with their Rock-a-Billy haven't taken over yet.

But like Pete says, find one that works for you and have at it.

i just go to the fri/sat night cruise ins & bypass the shows all together, except the goodguys show thats 10 mi from home & one nsra event a year thats also pretty close. haven't been to a local or parking lot show in years. i like the cruise in as i can look at what want & arrive/leave when i want. funny thing is, the same conversation going on here now is usually the same one that goes on at the shows.
i think alot of the cutoff years meant something in the past. pre 49 cars had external fenders & running boards vs. the more modern style used from 49-up. then the move to pre 72 signified the death of the muscle car when smog specs & safety bumpers/fuel economy took over. alot of the older guys who ran these clubs wouldn't know a new shelby from a regular gt. my dad, as much as he knows about cars wouldn't know the difference between most as he's not interested in the new stuff. you shhould have heard the fits pitched when the nsra changed from pre-49 to a rolling 25 yr cutoff....

one local car show full of muscle cars from the 60-70s was a great time untill the club owners thought they would get more people to show up if they had no limits on show cars that year the muscle cars were seperated from the ricers and new GTO's/Mustangs. the next about 1/2 of the muscle cars showed, then none. I knew it was bad when the concours class was won by a 92 pontiac sunbird- :puk I like to see cars from the 40s-50s when i go to a show, up here they are almost extinct I dont consider myself a snob but i will admit i will walk past a 80s and newer car. I have to wait half of a year to go to a show I go to see classics and i think that's what the majority of people think here.I do love your fox body and respect the work you put into it, I dont feel too bad for you because i own the top 2 cars that "snobs" love to stick their noses up to, an eleanor clone and a 78 cobra 2.

Stop wasting your time at car shows Bob, take that car to the track. We love ALL cars at the track. Skip's gonna need some company now.

It was NOT on a roll back. It was a tow truck and a strap :nut :homo

I thought maybe they just brought out the backhoe......be done with it.
I'll bet the clean up crew wanted to. I can hear 'em now " Oh great ..here comes Mr. one and done...get the kitty litter ready guys...a bunch of it."

Don't they have an automatic, remote controlled kitty litter dispenser they mount in his trunk as a requirement for him to be able to run?

They should open the back of the PT and let Mark toss kitty litter on the way around the track

Side story...

A few years ago the Bullitt Car Club (yes there's a international club concerned with the Bullitt movie and car) had its yearly meet in SF, the meca for the club. I helped out with directions to the movie scene locations. Well they had a car show...but all Bullitt cars, old and new.

So the old were basically 67-68s with TTDs and the front horsey removed. The new ones were the Ford issued Bullitts. That being said these people paid a premium for that Ford version. It had Bullitt stamped everywhere and some Mach Mustang updates of the day. One guy shows up with his new 'Bullitt' all modded with roll cage, aftermarket gauges, modded motor, extra PepBoys bling. Now what the hellll....this guy pays extra for a 'special' Ford produced car and then mods the heck out of it. :roul

Rant over.... :soapboxrant :roll
