Blow out

We went to the Smoky Mountains for the weekend and I drove the Tail of the Dragon. What a blast. On the way home however we had a blowout. Right front tire came apart. Tread left me! Ruined the wheel. Had to get towed. Find a junkyard V6 wheel, buy a tire to get home.

Why didn't you call your 'brother from another mother'? I could have brought the spare from the daughters '09 to you?

I was East of Knoxville, I wouldn't have made you drive all that way!
I had a spare anyway but two problems. First, my stock lug wrench wouldn't fit in the Shelby wheel to take the lug nuts off, second. I didn't want to drive 200+ miles on the donut spare
 
I'm going to keep the V6 wheel & tire for a spare AND get a socket and ratchet to keep in the car. The V6 wheel didn't have a tire when I got it from the junkyard so I bought a new tire at Firestone for that wheel. So now I have a new tire on a 16" wheel. The Shelby wheels are 18" but the diameter of the 16" wheel and tire are the same as the Shelby wheel and tire (low profile tires on the 18"). Also I will keep a couple pieces of wood blocks in the trunk too. It was so low I couldn't get the jack under it. The tow truck guy had wood we drove up on the get the roll back under the car. I was NOT prepared!!! but I will be now.
 
Ok, doesn't hurt to check, we're in Sevierville/ Pigeon Forge every few months. I'm in Orlando right now and MO next week so don't get any flats.

The Tail of the Dragon is up there near Sevierville isn't it? That's a nice drive; we went to their Mustang show- Ponies in the Smokies.
I had a similar situation a couple of months ago- just left the house in the daily driver (Toy Avalon which I have had for years) and got a flat (the tires were a week old), turned around an limped it home, but the lug wrench supplied with the car wouldn't fit the stock wheels and lugs. I had to go to the local auto parts store to get one that fit. At least I was close to home. I had driven around for 11 years with the wrong lug wrench.

Happy Anniversary Bill! I should have communicated better and we might could have had a double date one night!
Thanks Pat, my wife won't let me modify the engine but she let me update the body and stuff like that. Anyway, it is a fun drive for sure.
And yeah, the Tail of the Dragon is pretty close to Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. We drove in the the Smoky Mountain National Park and thru Gatlinburg. Did a little tourist stuff too. The lug wrench not fitting is my fault, I bought the Shelby wheels used and put them on the car as well as lowered it and put the chin spoiler and dual exhaust, the cowl hood and GT 500 rear bumper. I never bothered to check the lug wrench! It;s too thick to fit in the holes on the Shelby wheels.
 
yeah, I told my wife the same thing. If that had happened on the Dragon we might not be here anymore...
And yes i am glad there was no damage to the car. We were in the middle lane on I-40 doing 70+ mph with cars all around us. We had just went on to an area of new asphalt. We both heard and felt a vibration. We were just discussing if it could be a tire or the road when it blew. I was able to get the shoulder around all the other cars without incident and the tire tread must have went under the car. It went rolling past us in the right lane working its way to the middle and then the left before ending in the median. No one hit it and we just sat there looking at each other like "what just happened?"
There was some smoke and I'm sure some sparks as we skidded to the shoulder. I noticed some rubber on the back bumper where the tread must have come out from under the car. My guess is we hit something that caused the tire to go down rapidly and running almost flat must have cut the sidewalls. We were barely 10 miles or so from the hotel. I didn't check the actual pressure but I always do a visual before hitting the road and everything looked good. I had washed the car the day before by hand as well and tires looked good as i cleaned them. I didn't dare cross all three lanes of busy traffic to go collect the remains either...

Thanks dad. Yeah it would have been nice to have met up. I’ve kinda been mute as of late I suppose.
