Seems a little weird that they did that, but also sounds fair to me. Whenever I get a discount on food, like when I take advantage of "Kids eat free" at the IHOP, or I use a coupon, I always calculate tip BEFORE the discount. The restaurant is giving me a discount on the purchase of the food, but the waitress still had to order, run and tend to that food, so I make sure to cover it in the tip.

But I'm anal about tipping well, so don't mind me I'm sure your bill was a sight higher than my typical IHOP night

I think it was fair.
