Best bang for the buck distributor for mild 289

fbproject

New Member
65 fb with a mild 289 being built. I have to pull the trigger on what I want for the distributor. Choices, use the old point distributor and put a pertronix kit in it ( age unknown assume original ),parts store Duraspark with a msd 6a, Duraspark with the GM hei conversion or some other distributor set up and yes money is an object. On the same subject, any problem with used msd 6420 off e-bay if you can get a deal? How do you tell, can it be metered? Thanks

I had the stocker with petronix in the 67. Didn't like it. I have an Accel billit with points. I like it, but wish I could install a Crane Cams unit I have in it, but it will not fit.

So, I would say the duraspark and MSD.

Duraspark with MSD 6A will work fine.

You could probably save some coin and use a duraspark box too.

I used my old one and installed a pertronix and have had no problems.

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol that's a good one D!

I'm using a Duraspark with the Summit digital ignition box with rexv limiter, which is less than the MSD 6A w/o a rev limiter.

If money is a concern, use the Pertronix. You can always add the MSD6-A box (or equivalent) later. I ran a stock FoMoCo distributor with an MSD6A-L for several years before swapping the distributor to an MSD Pro Billet.

I'm a heretic. I run a Duraspark dist. w/ an HEI module. Cheap and effective where you don't need the rpm limit - dist was ~$40, HEI module ~$20. Based on what I've read, the HEI modules seem to be more reliable than the aftermarket Duraspark modules. They also work with any coil; I use a Ford TFI coil with mine.

I'm using duraspark and a duraspark box in the daughter's 65. Got them from a wrecking yard. Never looked back.
