Got a letter in the mail today from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District offering me $1,000 to take my 1967 vehicle to a scrapper and have it recycled!!

Ummmm no thanks!!!

I haven't seen it in person, but will give $2,000 and bring it to TN where it will not be threatened. :)

Sounds like you need to drive it more.....hopefully they will leave a note when the pick it up.

Justin:

I have gotten a couple of those a few years back. IIRC there was some language at the bottom to the effect that if your smog belching heap is a collector car, please disregard this letter...... I recycled the letter

Let's all hope that in the future this letter doesn't read "Please report to your nearest Bay Area Air Quality Management District Office as soon as possible with your old gas guzzling relic for abatement. Please remember to make arrangements for a ride home."

In blue states like yours and mine that day may well be a reality much sooner than we fear. They may not take our cars but they may ban their use which is just as bad.

I'd say its way past time to move to a 'less blue' state . . . or this could be a way to double your money on that 'parts' car sitting under the cover in your backyard. Ive had a few over the years.

I got the same letter a couple of days ago. Did not state what vehicle, only 1965. So is it for the Mustang or the F100? Received the same letter in the past for this 1934. I agree, No Thanks on all 3.

I also got "the letter" the other day.

I can just see some widow getting this letter and turning in her late husband's old Mustang she never really liked anyway.

You are probably not too far off of the mark there. The environmental Nazis are firmly in control of the People's Republic of California. Jerry Brown is dedicated to the environment, which translates to "I'm either really gullible or I have a stake in some pollution credit exchange scheme". I'd defend my Mustang to the death with my firearms, but they will have probably either taken them or outlawed ammunition by the time they get around to confiscating these nasty gasoline burning vehicles. Isn't it great to have the professional folks to look after us incompetent citizens? Since moving to Placer County, I haven't gotten any of those "save the planet" offers for my old beaters. I did notice that the smog test for my 15 year old Z28 has significantly been relaxed, however. I took it in as requested by the DMV and the guys at the smog test shop never hooked anything that I was aware of up to the car. It was purely a visual inspection. They sniffed around at my aftermarket air lid and the two new CATs until they found the BAR numbers on them. Still cost $48 though, even if they didn't run it on the dyno or do a proctological exam on the exhaust. They said the rules had just changed in July, so that is like an admission by the state that they are just interested in your $48 and not the air quality.

I never heard of charging for a mandated smog test. I cannot believe EVEN Californians stand for it. You willingly pay to have your government force you to put more cost into the vehicles you drive. Crazy.

They do it here in MD, you do it if you want to drive a vehicle. If not the late fees and fines add up quickly.

From infinity and beyond

Here in the land of Stupid Blue we too have smog testing but even here in Illinois where they tax the shit out of everything it carries no cost to the motorist. I didn't think there was an opportunity lost on the Democrats here to take more of our money. It is an absolute crime to force people to do something like this and even more so to charge them for the pleasure.

I only have to have a $5 inspection sticker once a year. No smog tests or anything. As long as you've got working lights, blinkers, and a horn, you're good. Suck it city dwellers.

We don't even have inspections at all here. Milwaukee is the closest area to me that needs inspections.

How much do you guys have to pay for plate renewals or registration each year?

Yeah, but who in their right mind wants to live in Mississippi?
