I took Jr to his first cruise in this afternoon with the 69 Fastback. Any suggestions on baby seats that fit? I need to buy a smaller stroller that will fit in the trunk but even then it'll be a tight fit for mom up front.

I have been looking into the same thing. There really isn't too much that will be smaller. We took our little girl for her first ride in the mustang last fall and we ended up with her in the front seat since there are no airbags anyway.
Now she is in the next stage car seat but still rear facing. That won't fit in the back seat either until she can go forward facing.

Isn't it illegal for a small child (let alone one in a car seat!) to ride in the front seat in all the states? I know it is here in IL.
I am not recommending that anyone put their child in the front seat. Most states laws are for airbag equipped vehicles.
We only had her in there once and went about mile from our house. She has not been in there since.
Her new seat is too big so she will not be riding in the mustang until she can go forward facing in the back.

I didn't mean for you to take my comment as being directed at you. I was just simply wondering if other parts of the country had the same rules. I'll have to look up the IL laws now as I am curious if they are limited to just vehicles with air bags. I realize this was the driving force behind it but I don't think it was limited in that way.

I didn't take it that way. I was just clarifying. We spent all winter trying to find a car seat that would fit properly in the back seat since we were planning on doing the Power tour this year. My little girl has never been in my Volvo for the same reason. Nothing fits in the backseat in that cat either.

They make stroller frames made to clip the car seat in. Very light frames and compact. We loved ours when the boy was still in a car seat carrier.

Regarding the comments on legalities of child seats or getting smaller/bigger ones, let me say this. The laws differ from state to state. The bottom line is actually what is the safest (yeah I know, thank you Capt. Obvious). With that said, the back seat is always the safest for a child, regardless of air bags being present. The center of the rear seat is actually the safest position for them.
Also, don't be too concerned with what fits in the car as much as what properly fits your child for their size/weight/age. It DOES matter. Kids do grow out of their seats and they need to be replaced with the proper size and style. Don't think you can have a small baby and get a bigger seat knowing they'll grow into it. It's not like a pair pants. Believe it or not, most people don't even install the seat properly in their car.
I share this having been certified through NHTSA as a child safety seat inspector. The certification program is nationwide and they operate a free inspection program called Safe Kids. They'll inspect your child seat to insure you have the right size for your child, check your particular seat for recalls, how to properly fit the restraints to the child and how to properly install it in the car.
You can check with your local police, fire department, hospitals, civic groups or baby stores (such as Babies R' Us). Any of these will usually host a free inspection on a monthly or quarterly basis. It takes on 15 to 20 minutes and you'll be surprised how much you learn! BTW, even though businesses host the inspections sometimes, the inspectors themselves are not their to sell you anything or represent the business. It is totally a NHTSA program. When I participated in the program the inspectors were police, fire fighters, as well as staff from the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital (who was also the local agency that coordinated and oversaw the program).
