Are 1st generation convertible tops waterproof?

I've got a silly question, but I read something in the latest issue of Mustang Monthly about a convertible top in a '66 not being waterproof as it was driven thru a carwash. Are 1st generation convertibles okay to drive in the rain? Do they leak anywhere such as the windshield header or rear window zipper?

Way back in the day, I remember my sister's '66 vert being susceptible to leaking between the top and the windshield header on rainy days on the highway. She usually had to carry a towel with her on those days to keep things wiped down. She might have even laid the towel flat on the header and clamped down the top .
 
What Sacbill said. Mine leaks around 70-75 MPH between the top and the windshield header other then that it's watertight.

Maybe it was one of Ford's innovative safety designs? It's raining...drive slower...fewer leaks...oh, and fewer accidents!
 
I had a '64 Comet Caliente Vert that leaked at the top of the windshield when driven above 70 mph in the rain. Never leaked in the car wash though. When the new top went on, the installer added a bit of medium soft foam under the top material whic helped a lot. This was back in '73.....
 
I'm positive that if you had an original top from 1965, it would be leaking by now.
 
my brother-in-law opened his umbrulla inside my wifes 66 convrt on the way to the airport because of it leaking at the header back about 1980-same day that we lost the brakes at the exit ramp at the airport because exhaust shop routed pipe too close to brake hose-made for a fun farewell for my canadian relatives. wes
