o.k., finally got around to puling the fuel sending unit... again. i think the problem with this thing is the rubber sealing washer where the bolt that connects the inner wire/outer wire passes thru the plate. the rubber deteriorates & the connection gets loose. monkey with the sender wire & it quit working. i had it loose over the summer when i painted everything underneath, reconnected it & it hasnt worked since. noticed the assembly was loose today when i unhooked it & took it out. sure enough, the rubber washer has deteriorated to an unuseable state.

is there anything i can use to seal this that wont rot away within a year or so? in the pic clockwise is the nut, steel washer, rubber sealing washer & insulating fiber washer. the rubber is the weak link...

I had a similar issue with one of my sending units and salvaged the rubber piece from a dead unit. I can probably salvage from another one if you like.

This is timely, I think I need to check mine. I just noted some of my 2 year old rubber gas lines were looking bad. Can they not make good rubber now or is it the corn added gas we now have?

I think you hit the nail on the head John. Ethanol is very hard on rubber that is not designed to run "alcohol"

if you go to a good parts store such as napa or car quest, they have "ethanol proof" fuel hose now. thats what i used last summer when i made up the new stainless lines & replaced the whole system.

dug thru all my junk today & found a hard rubber (almost plastic) washer that fit & is dense enough to allow the bolt/nut assembly to tighten. hopefully it will fix the problem. got it reassembled & will add some gas tomorrow & see how it does..
